One in 10 agriculture workers in California are born outside of the U.S., and more than half are not in the country legally, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

California produces more than 350 commodities; including one-third of the nation’s vegetables and nearly two-thirds of the nation’s fruits and nuts. California also produces 90 percent of the strawberries grown in the U.S.

‘Blue card’ bill could legalize ag workforce in Santa Cruz County

Seems to me that all Trump is going to end up doing is force the issue of providing for more legalized immigration, more legitimate Hispanic Americans. Can't have it both ways in any case...
Cute story, too bad it's not true:

Most illegals do not work in agriculture — only about 4 percent of the illegal-immigrant population is employed in farming. In no state is farming the predominant occupation of illegal immigrants; even in places such as California, where labor-intensive fruit-and-vegetable farming attracts a relatively large illegal workforce, the main occupations of illegals are in hospitality (restaurants and hotels), services, and transportation.

We have a program where foreign, "migrant" workers actually come here LEGALLY and regularly work in agriculture. Illegals are not needed and rarely do this kind of work.

If illegals are not needed, why are they hired... millions of them?

Of course those who knowingly hire illegals have blame and should be made to pay for the consequences of hiring them.

Americans simply do NOT want to pick fruit, lettuce, tomatoes etc all day under the hot sun for $8/hour, and so illegal immigration will likely continue. I don't blame the farmers/employers really, they have work that needs to get done, and the illegal Mexicans are willing to do the dirty jobs for the wages offered.

Americans view dirty farm jobs as "beneath" them and dismiss the notion of working for min wage out of hand, so it's no surprise that it's 2017 and illegal Mexicans are still a thing.
^^^^Really? You must be unaware that there are Americans who do farm work. In the Heartland, there are high school kids who spend their summers working the farms.

Besides, farm work is seasonal work. Most people want year-round employment. Many unemployed people live either in urban or suburban areas. How are they going to get to the farms? Many don't have any transportation or the vehicle they do have is old and unreliable. Even with a reliable vehicle, much of their pay would be going to gas up their vehicle. Are you willing to volunteer your time and vehicle to transport them to the farms?

Once again, farmers have an agricultural visa available to them that has no caps on it. Honest farmers use this program and have no problems getting their crops picked. It's the sleazy farmers who refuse to use the visa program and instead to opt for cheap, exploitable, illegal labor who have problems. I have no sympathy for them.

Don't pretend that you don't know the answer to your question. However, I will humor you. They are hired by employers because they know that they can pay them less than Americans and legal immigrants. Plus, they don't have to provide any benefits or safe working conditions. As long as illegals are a dime a dozen, sleazy employers will continue to exploit them.

It's funny how the right wing never brings up the employers, be they agricultural related or not. It's 100% fault of the brown man.

Yeah, this ^^

Why are millions of illegal Mexicans hired in the first place if they are unnecessary? Makes no sense.

Obviously employers, both corporations and private gringo/farmer employers, are voluntarily choosing to hire these illegal Mexicans, so there's obviously a "need" for them somewhere.

Probably because the employer is almost always a fellow white/gringo, but can't bring that up for obvious reasons

Why are you purposely ignoring the criticism of the employers in the posts you're citing?

The first one you jumped on was this:

The illegals are just as guilty as the farmers who hire them. No one drags them over the border to pick crops. They know full well they aren't entitled to be here or to work here.
What part of the "the illegals are just as guilty as the farmers who hire them" do you not understand?

You actually did read the OPs post, right?

Only 10% of ag workers in CA were born outside the US, and only half of those are criminal aliens. 5% isn't going to stop you from getting your lettuce.

No one ever said their lives are easy. I fail to understand why the fact they are hard workers has any bearing on the problem.
