LOS ANGELES-An elevator mechanic at Los Angeles International
Airport has been charged with smuggling illegal immigrants into
the country by helping them evade federal inspectors and
ushering them into taxis outside a terminal.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia
Kice says 53-year-old Roberto Amaya Canchola was indicted by a
federal grand jury Friday on three counts of making money off
immigrant smuggling and three counts of helping passengers skirt
immigration officers.

Canchola was arrested last month by federal immigration agents
in a sting operation. Agents say they believe Canchola was using
his airport security clearance to escort Mexicana Airlines
passengers out of the terminal without being inspected by
authorities.

What really scares me is that these kinds of people get security clearance.....

It's obviously all about the green. What happens when some terrorist offers him more money than he's previously seen to get him into the country. Will he suddenly get an attack of conscience? I hardly think so.

A security clearance simply mean's you pass the background check- No felony conviction-no legal matters pending - etc.

Anyone get get a security clearance which is why sting type operations should be conducted every few month's at ALL airlines's as large sums of money are offered to some and be it Hispanic-White-Black-Asian,etc anyone can become corrupt.

I agree. My problem is not with this man's ethnicity but with his proximity to passengers and ability to circumvent Immigration due to his clearance.

I think the rules need to be changed so that it is no longer possible for anyone to move passengers out of the deplaning area past Immigration simply because of their security clearance.

I think the penalty for this must me brutal. Treated same as aiding a terrorist and anything else than can add . A person who will sneak someone in doesn't care who it is money is money .

The penalty now from what I gather seem's weak.

If someone doing this knows they can make $15 to $30,000 in a day, week and if caught they get a few months they are more prone to do it than if by Fed law they must get 30 yrs min .

Yet another refute to this is not a matter of national security.

Unfortunately, Adysmom . . . this scenario has been repeated far too often over the years.

Having worked at many airports, including LAX, I have witnessed this type of TREASON far too often.

Thankfully, these fiascos are being exposed by the media and these goons are receiving more severe punishment due to that exposure.
