The arrests of 389 Agriprocessors workers and the tearing apart of their families, followed by criminal charges against plant supervisors, including former top executive Sholom Rubashkin, plunged the town's leading employer into bankruptcy and a shutdown that put hundreds more employees out of work.
"Drive down main street, and you'll see the condition of Postville. Five businesses have closed, and more are in the process," said the Rev. Paul Ouderkirk, a leader in the Catholic Church's ministry to Postville's Latino community.
Hispanic attendance at Postville's St. Bridget Catholic Church, he said, declined sharply after the raid, which led to the deportation of hundreds of mostly Guatemalan and Mexican workers.
A year later, St. Bridget's Hispanic Ministry is still caring for 30 families, most of which include members awaiting court hearings, and Ouderkirk said the ministry has hired a psychiatric counselor to help church wards cope with stress caused by the raid and its aftermath.
Departing laid-off workers, some embittered by their Postville experience, left many of the town's rental units in shambles.
I don't think anyone will ever look back and say it was a good thing. This is a community that is deeply hurt and grieving," she said.
Those departing workers more likely than not were illegal aliens living 20 to a rental in shambles prior to their "departure." The fact that Postville is suffering as a result of their greed and lawless behavior in the name of cheap illegal alien labor IMHO is just desert.
The moral of this story: Crime only pays temporarily. When you live by the sword eventually you die by it . . . .

The tearing apart of families begins when one or more of the parents deserts the family in the old Country to come here illegally.
Agreed. The "please don't separate our familia" mantra is as old, tired and exposed as being a blatant lie as and "we're just doing the jobs Americans won't do". Unfortunately, they are too blinded by their own delusions of grandier and LaRaza's brainwashing tactics to realize it.

The way I see it is if most people realized the "we're just doing the jobs Americans won't do" was bull @#$% hopefully people will not believe the family one also.
It sort of reminds me of a community near where I live. For years it was acceptable for politicians to get kick backs for contracts etc. The fed this year has cracked down big time on said county.
You hear people complaining quite a bit about how these politicians did so much for the community. NO they did so much for themselves and their friends.
Any company that would opt to hire illegals over legals does it for but 1 reason. Greed. They don't pass the savings on to the consumer. They don't care about the scab illegal who is low balling wages and they absolutely don't care about the community the community they are located in.
