Due to the general economic situation, I am thinking to look for something away from Chicago, where I can cut rental costs and relax. I am thinking of a rural area or a small city in S. Illinois or Kentucky. We are a family of five, so we are looking for at least 2BR+. I would like to find something in the order of $300-$500, now we are paying $900+ and I have no justification in keeping this place anymore. We are not interested to find jobs in the area as we have other income. The only thing I would like is a relatively safe area where kids can go outside and enjoy nature.
Please recomend me some areas you think I should check out. |

Southern Illinois is a great, cheap place to relax with very friendly people and almost no crime. I grew up there and sometimes miss the slow pace of rural areas. Most of the towns in Southern Illinois are very similar--small, rural, farming communities. I grew up near Mt. Carmel, which I think was a nice area to grow up. If you're looking for more scenic landscape, try some of the smaller towns around Carbondale. There are some absolutely stunning state parks down there and cost of living is cheap. If you get bored, Carbondale (which isn't huge, but has a fair amount of things to do) is only a short drive away.

Thank you for the advice.
I posted a similar question on Kentucky forums and I am thinking to take my family for an extended trip, going down to South Illinois and then West to Kentucky. I will check Carbondale area. Oh, I forgot to mention, we love the slow pace of rural areas ![]() |

Paducah, KY is a really great town right on the Illinois border. It is nationally recognized for its Arts District, which is really amazing for a town of its size. It's quite a charming place, although I wouldn't call it a "small" town (pop. of approx. 25,000). This one is definitely worth checking out if you're into cultural/historic stuff. It's one of those "hidden gems" for sure.

I see Paducah is really close to the areas we intent to visit, so I put it on the list. Thanks!

Great! I always enjoyed Paducah, although a lot of people automatically write it off when they see "Kentucky" after the name
If you have any more questions about the area--let me know! Enjoy your trip...you'll be in for some great relaxation! |
