I have accepted a teaching position in a small town in Southeastern Indiana. It is mid-way between Louisville, Kentucky and Bloomington. I have been through Indiana several times, but I am not familiar with this particular region of the state, so I would appreciate any help those of you who are familiar can give me. I would like to know what the "nice" areas of the cities mentioned above are because I really have no idea. I really don't care for the suburbs, so would like to eliminate that choice from the equation. I would also consider a mid-sized town, if that is an option, or I would also consider a rural location if I could find something for rent. At any rate, does anyone have any input? If I could at least know what areas to for sure stay away from, that would be helpful. Thanks....

I live in Northeastern Indiana but I'm familiar with that part of the state. There are no real "cities" between Bloomington and Lousiville; there are only the suburbs of Louisville (such as Clarksville and New Albany) along the Ohio River. There are many small towns; but most have very limited services and you'll find that you have to go to Indianapolis or Louisville for any serious medical conditions, culture or shopping.

Southern Indiana is very rural (except for Bloomington and Evansville) and very poor. There are limited services and the area is geared mostly towards agricultural, rather business or cultural, pursuits. If this is something that you might find difficult, you may consider living in Bloomington or nearer to Louisville and commuting to work.

Without knowing the specific town where you'll be working, it's difficult to provide anything other generalities.

If you think southern Indiana is "very poor," you should check out rural areas of Mississippi, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas, just to name a few.

Could you tell us the name of the town in which you'll be working? That could help us in making recommendations.

Starke county is very odd...

However, it probably takes the cake for fiscal conservatism.

Yes, the name of the town is Medora. I know it is very small, so living there would not be possible (no rentals, and I feel more comfortable living in a larger community, anyway.) Thanks for everyone's input thus far.

Default Columbus, Bedford?

Columbus sounds nice! I looked at the city website. I can see that Columbus is a mid-sized town/city--do you (or anyone have any opinion on Bedford?) I ask because it is only a twenty minute drive (or so says Mapquest,) from Medora. Bedford is much smaller, of that much I am aware, but I might be willing to give up size for convenience. Thanks!
