I havent been to Raleigh recently, but I am staying in Indy for the summer. I don't think traffic is bad here at all, outside of the morning and evening rush. Even then, it's heavy, but usually moves at a good place outside of a few, very few areas.

Indy is a planned city, and IMHO has a very good road network. I don't think you'll find the traffic to be bad here at all. The worst area is the I-69/I-465/I-70 path into/out of downtown at the morning, evening rush. Traffic is always bad there. But if you are working near the Children's museum, and want to live in Lawrence, traffic shouldn't be bad at all. Fall Creek Parkway can sometimes get busy, however. Lawrence would be a good choice if you have children - good schools, I hear - but the northside of Indy has some of the best neighborhoods in the city. Fall Creek Place is an up and coming area; Zionsville is quite nice, but expensive. Housing is very reasonable in Indy, so you should be able to find something nice and affordable.

Good luck with your decision, and welcome to Indy!

Since Indy is based on the grid system, there are an unlimited number of ways to move around.

We lived in Raleigh and there was often one way in and one way out. The roads were horrible in the 90s and with the growth could only get worse.

When we were in Apex, the only way 55 got upgraded or widened was when a new subdivision was built and the builder was required to upgrade or widen their part. So you had two lane, two with center, two lane, four lane, two with center etc. all the way from Apex to 40. Horrid.

And everyone wanted to funnel into RTP which created its own nightmare.

We just have I69 but there are still ways around it.

You can take Fall Creek Road up to Lawrence from the CM (love that place by the way!). I have found that there are a lot of careless drivers in Indianapolis. This is because I've seen many chatting on their phones, putting on makeup and ... READING while driving. I also think that there are a lot of folks who just aren't used to stop and go city driving. You'll be fine.

Indy's traffic at its worst is not as bad as Raleigh's. Raleigh has aweful traffic as does Greensboro. Charlotte is probably the worst in NC.

Even though we might complain from time to time here in Indy about the traffic compared to almost any other city, Indy traffic is a piece of cake. There are pockets where it gets bad. But one thing I know that is easy is finding your way around the area - very, very easy

Indy is easy to learn. Best advice is to live where you work and work where you live. You can't work downtown and live in Fishers. Live in Carmel, work in Carmel, Carmel is king. Nouveau riche and annoying, but you can't argue with success !

Hubby had no issues with living in Fishers and working downtown ... it's nice having choices.

Domergurl is absolutely correct about taking Fall Creek Road from the downtown area up to Lawrence. It is usually the fastest and that's what I like.....speed in and out of Indy.

56th Street is another excellent thoroughfare to take out to Lawrence...love it at all times of the day. There is no 'rush hour' traffic jam on 56th and I love using it through the Ft Benjamin Harrison district. I have learned to avoid taking 79th Street out to Lawrence (the Geist area) because that can and often gets jammed up during rush hour.

indianapolis traffic is very low compared to other cities of the same size because indy is based on the grid system so there is more than one route to take from point a to b i also like to point out that the I-70/465/69 corridor is a little easier now that vehicles over 10 tons are banned on that side of town
