You do well with either Plainfield or Speedway. With Speedway, the schools are still good, though, as others have said, some of the less-stellar apartment complexes definitely bring a not-great element to the schools. It's still very small, and the homes are charming and well kept. Speedway is getting a shot in the arm with its downtown, and the commute to a job at the airport shouldn't be bad at all--sort of a reverse commute.

Plainfield has exemplary schools. The only reason Speedway wouldn't rate highly is because of those cruddy apartments, but anywhere can get those. Still right now Plainfield has the edge, I'd say! Stellar schools, decent shopping (not as chain-y as it used to be, though chains still dominate), and they are also working on sprucing up their downtown, tiny as it may be. But the commute would not be that great--traffic could be unpleasant on US 40 (Washington Street) and even worse if you take Rockville Road into the city, which you would only do if you tried Avon instead of Plainfield.

Speedway or Plainfield would probably be your best bets.

.
From Plainfield, one would take I-70 to the airport (5 minutes) or to downtown (10 minutes-ish) US 40 is only a last resort- say, if I-70 was closed or you were actually going somewhere located on US 40. When we lived in Plainfield, the only time we ever took US 40 vs. I-70 into the city was to go to the zoo. It's not a pleasant strip to drive either.
