Fishers is nice but very little of it is walkable. Unless you live close to 116th St & Allisonville Rd. From there you can walk to a few restaurants and a couple grocery stores. It's bit of a walk, but you could also walk to the Fishers library from there.

As for Carmel, the Arts & Design district is nice and walkable. It's definitely family friendly and I see families with little kids out there all the time. During the summer there are more than a couple festivals where they close off Main Street through the Arts & Design District. But it's a very long walk to a grocery store from there. The closest would probably be either Meijer at Carmel Dr and Pennsylvania St or Kroger on Rangeline just north of Carmel Dr. The Fishers Farmers Market is at the train station on the Municipal Circle, on 116th St west of I-69. I believe the Carmel Farmers Market, which they claim is the largest in the state, is at City Center, which is walkable from the Arts & Design district down the Monon, It's probably a mile or a little less.

Under $200,000 in Fishers and Carmel, you will not find many homes with basements. There are a few out there but they are few and far between. This is mostly do to the fact that the ground is clay, making it much more expensive to dig into for basements.

For things to do in the winter, Fishers has a YMCA with an indoor pool area. I don't know how much it is to join but it's not that expensive I don't think. Carmel has the Monon Community Center which has an outdoor water park in the summer and an indoor pool area with water slides in the winter. The Children's Museum in Indianapolis is an option for winter. You could get a membership and go whenever you wanted. There's also the Indiana State Museum downtown Indianapolis.

I've lived in Indiana almost all of my 35 years and I've never actually seen a tornado. I've been in several tornado warnings and sought shelter in a basement a handful of times, but never been in anything worse than straightline winds. The way I see it, there are natural disasters that are a possibility no matter where you live, whether it's tornadoes or hurricanes or earthquakes. I prefer tornadoes because their path of destruction is very narrow and you usually get some kind of warning.

You might want to check out Westfield. Great schools and Countryside is a great community with walking and biking trails. It has a Kroger very near that you can actually bike or walk to from within the community. My kids graduated from the schools there and now my grandkids go there. I was born and raised in Indiana and never actually saw a tornado. We did have them come near us on several occasions. We went to an interior room. Overall, we enjoyed the life in Westfield. Its very near Carmel.

OK, I have lived in Indiana my whole life and I am 40 years old.

I have not seen any tornados. I mean I have seen some damage caused by one or it might have been just some really high straight line winds. Our house had a lot of damage to trees, no house damage though.

I don't even think about tornados - sure one could hit where I live, I know that, but chances are very remote

Carmel grocery stores:

Rangeline and carmel krogers
116 and keystone marsh
116 and rangeline a earth fare is opening in summer.
Carmel and meridian meijers
106 and michigan has a marsh and a super target
136 and meridian has a marsh, a fresh market.
136 and grey(i think) has a whole foods
Plus both trader joes are within a 15 minute drive.

Heck i think carmel has a ton of grocery stores, i know i missed a few more than i listed. Plus the farmers market is huge in summer and actually has meats still in the winter.

That would be excellent! I heard there was going to be a gas station there as well.

Yeah, it was in the plans but that and also the proposed fast food joint both got nixed which was the reason the project got approved. I believe the gas station will now be built at 146th and Towne road.
