We'll be visiting the Indy area 10/12 through 10/17 with two kids (8-12 year-old range). I've already got some ideas of things we want to see/do, but I'd rather have more possibilities than we can manage than not enough. So, I'm asking you locals for suggestions...things you & your kids would enjoy...including suggestions in the event of rain/bad weather. We'll be staying in Carmel, so pretty central within the northern 'burbs. We don't mind driving to get where we need to go.

Hopefully you already know about the Children's Museum, claimed as the largest in the world. You could also check out Conner Prairie in Fishers. In addition to their regular stuff, they have a corn maze new this year and starting next Thursday on weekend evenings they have their Headless Horseman events.

Those are a couple of kid-centric suggestions. Check out www.visitindy.com

My kids love the aforementioned Children's Museum. We have a membership and go regularly.

We enjoy the Rhythm center downtown, though don't go often.

The canal and White River state park are safe options to go for a walk or rent one of those goofy Surrey bikes. The zoo is near there too. Boo at the zoo is going on now. I hear it is better now than last year. It was a cluster**** for sure last year.

Yeah, we'd like to avoid anything that could be characterized as such. We get enough of that here in Southern California!

Thanks for all the suggestions, so far, everyone. Very helpful! Keep 'em coming...including "non-touristy" things, if you can think of any.

Lots of "pumpkin patch" farms going on right now too. I take my son to this one every year:

Russell Farms Pumpkin Patch

Also:

Pumpkin Harvest Festival

Spencer Farm - Home

Smith Family Farms

I can't vouch for the last three, just there as examples.

If your going to be downtown near the canal, the Indiana State Museum is down there and has an Imax theather.

This is a good thread because I will probably make a trip to Indy sometime in may 2018. (to see the cubs vs giants) But I am also interested because I am considering moving out of cali and moving somewhere else. The reason why I'm interested in indy because it's affordable and it looks like the political game isn't as outrageous as it is in california. But I too need some recommendations. I dont have any kids and I am in my early 30's. I'll probably stay there for four days or so. Any "cool" places that I should visit?

If you're going in the summer, Indy has a wonderful AAA ball club as well, the Indians. GenCon is a huge draw to the city. There are lots of amateur sports going on. The Indy 500 and its museum are a big attraction. I've been to the zoo, and while nice, it's probably not going to be better than what you have in southern CA. Indianapolis Museum of Art is also worth a visit.

Conner Prairie in Fishers is good for the "old timey" fix.

Hi, all...OP here. Due to an unexpected family emergency, we had to change our travel plans. So, I'm trying to re-schedule our trip for a couple weeks later. Only problem I'm having is the hotels seem to be booked up. Is some popular event happening in the Indy area between 10/25 and 10/30?

The National FFA Convention is downtown at the convention center and Lucas Oil Stadium Oct 25-28. That is definitely going to fill up a lot of hotels. It's one of the largest conventions. This year they're expecting 58,000 - 60,000 people to attend.
