I'm looking for a cheaper apartment (something less than $600) west of Downtown. I'm not familar with the area at all. Is it a safe location? I've heard contradicting reports.

So far Deercorss, Pebble Point and Bayhead Village seemed okay to me, but then again I have heard nothing but bad things about the area. Is the Lafayette mall really that bad?

Should I be looking else where? If so can you please recommend some good places to look (not Avon, Carmel, or Fishers too far of a commute + too expensive).

Thanks.

I lived at Deercross a year ago. They are great apartments. The crime rate is not that bad at 38th and Eagle Creek. I even frequented the businesses along West 38th; though I also sought out alternatives in other nearby areas as well (such as Speedway and Trader's Point).

Don't listen to those who rip the area apart despite never having been there. The area west of 465 is not that bad.

That's kind of what I thought.

Thank you DC 38 for your quick reply. That eases a lot of my worries.

Be sure you are west of 465. And don't plan on making it a longterm stay

The west 38th St area is fine, provided it's outside the I-465 loop. I currently live in one of the apartment complexes there, and have lived here for ~4 years without incident. I have 3 friends who live in neighboring apartment complexes (Deercross, Island Club, Fisherman's Village), and they too have not had any problems. It's actually a pretty convenient location. It's close to the I-465 and I-74 exits, a short drive to shopping areas in Avon or 86th St areas. Everything I need (good dentist, vet, Home Depot, Best Buy, Target, Marsh, Meijer, Kroger, PetCo, cleaners, restaurants) is nearby or a short distance away.

Personally, I would not go to Lafayette Square mall (heard it's not the safest), and prefer Castleton or Circle Center malls. I wouldn't hang out on 38th St at night (but then I have no reason to), but driving through there is fine even at night. In general though, I avoid 38th St as much as I can just because road conditions and potholes are always horrid and I hate driving on it. But I've never felt endangered living in this area.

I also have a friend who used to live in the Oaks of Eagle Creek Apartments (56th St x I-465) on the west side and he seemed to like it there. That, and apartments in that area, might be an option as well.

directly west of Indy is not a great area, stay west of 465. You could try NW. Their are some much safer areas with tons of apartments near 86th and Michigan.
