Yep .. It does have a 'close' option but since I check my email, at least a dozen times a day .. I get really tired of 'closing' the thing .. every time!

Maybe you could mention it in a feedback email?
Do you have tabbed browsing? When I switch from one tab to my gmail tab, the feedback thing does not pop up.
Anyway, I don't think this will last forever.
