Why do you care where everyone is when you are out of town? I couldn't care less where anyone else is when I'm in town, out of town or about town and I also don't consider it anyone's business where I am at any particular time. I never ever tell anyone other than a few close relatives when I am going out of town and I sure as hell wouldn't post it on social media and alert all the thieves in the area that it is open house around my place.

There is a growing occurrence of stalkers using social media, in particular twitter, to find out where their victims are at a particular time as well as criminals using it to determine when the best time is to hit you up.
Fair enough... however, you may want to look into Twitter in more detail. It appears that you don't really understand it (based on your post).

Yikes ... well, if you have 150 people split up into 20 lists, that sounds like part of the problem. Might be time to rethink who you're following, or maybe try something other than Twitter. It's not really meant to be a streaming archive, more like a real-time feed. Failing that, you might find that apps like Seesmic or Tweetdeck can help.

ITT: Someone posting on a forum furiously complaining about why he would want to read what other people have to say.

If you don't want to get updates from some people, just unfollow them. I've unfollowed a few people I thought were cool, but all they tweeted was crap, so they were done with quickly.

We've kind of sidetracked a bit? From helping answer a question to a full-on Twitter debate??

When I said "is there a reason to?" I meant "follow the OP".
I use Twitter.
I follow:
  • The Local Deli that tweets the soup of the day
  • Don Rickels (dude's funny)
  • Craig Ferguson (dude isn't real funny on Twitter)
  • Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I used to follow Chelsea Handler but she got boring...

And that's it really. I don't follow anyone I actually know.
Restaurants using it to tweet specials is far and away about the smartest thing I have seen anyone use Twitter for...
I also liked the time Anthony Bourdain used it to tweet during an episode of No Reservations. Very cool getting live comments from him while watching the episode.

As usual people slamming something that have never even tried..... plenty of good reasons to use Twitter.

That's the start of a hashtag. Think of it as the subject line. It's used to help make Tweets searchable. For example:

"Wow! This weather is amazing! Going for a run, who's with me? #weather"
"The concert is delayed 15 minutes due to a rabid antelope caught in a tuba. #harrisburgsymphony"
"We're pulling up now! #hbgtweetup"

We used them extensively during some major flooding last year. Anyone searching for #cenpaflood (as in "Central PA flood") got real-time updates and photos from the heart of the devastation.

The #hashtags were incredibly useful during hurricane Irene last year. It allowed emergency units to communicate with folks who did not have power for extended periods of time.
