Depends on the actual fund. All of these companies usually have 10, 20, or more different index or mutual funds of sorts that have varying fees, risk, diversification, and more. I would go to Google and look at the different funds for each one and then maybe ask more specific questions. I like some of the Vanguard and Pimco funds personally.

You got good answers here:

If you open an account at Vanguard, no fee for VWINX; PTTRX there might be a fee of $8 or $9. No big deal.

You won't be trading with that account, so the fees shouldn't matter. And even if you do, again, they aren't high. Check into IRA account maintenance fees. Either Vanguard or Fidelity shouldn't be much. Once your balance is in excess of $x, I don't think they charge anything.

Visit their websites.

i use both. i like fidelity because they have some very good managed funds and its easy to put together good model portfolios and to extract the strengths out of the various managers at different times actually beating the markets without any fund having to beat the markets.

vanguard is good for low cost investing on your own and only offers a few managed funds i would recommend.

you have alot more options for investment vehicles and research at fidelity so im about 80% fidelity 20% vanguard.

You really need to learn about mutual funds as there are many different kinds and they have many different investment objectives. Both Vanguard and Fidelity have many funds to choose from with many different objectives.

For the most part Fidelity has higher, but not super high, expenses. Lower expense funds usually do better than hit exense one, but there are a fair number of exceptions to that general rule.

Both companies have some very good funds and some lousy funds.
