General Electric, which has been selling or shutting down its industrial lines for years, will be removed from the DJ industrial average after the close on June 25. Its replacement will be Walgreens, a drug retailer.

This really says a lot about the USA and its transformation from an industrial powerhouse to "an advanced service economy."

Spent my career with Alcoa another recent "Dow dump". Old line manufacturing is no longer part of the Dow. My late father would say "pretty soon all that will be left is people selling hamburgers and people selling insurance". Seem that has come to pass.

American manufacturers got lazy and complacent. They don't want to invest in themselves in responsible, long term thinking ways to stay competitive.

They have. They've offshored production to take advantage of cheaper labor and lax environmental laws.
