So you're down...why does that matter?

there seems to be this expectation that if one's portfolio isn't at an all time high its this big bad thing...not saying you're saying exactly that, but that's the sentiment I got from your post.....

it is funny how we like to bench mark things off some momentary point in time yet we never expect to sell at the exact high.

one can be up 1000 percent but if it is below that momentary point in time one is down

Jesus dude. It matters to me - ergo my comment about it. The timing of the downturn was just par for the course for me, and it was frustrating - it still is - but obviously I am still invested. I certainly expect/hope things will turn positive - eventually. I said nothing about it being "this big bad thing". I'm finding it silly that the media is all "BULL MARKET"...when we still are down. You are reading something else into my post - whatever you want to read apparently. And I also said nothing about always expecting to be at an all time high. Please.

That's why the media says we're in a bull market again. We're only 10% from the record artificially inflated highs. How much higher can stocks go?

Things will turn around, be patient, and stay invested.

Double that in real dollar terms.

If you adjust for inflation 2022 was a really, really bad year for the indexes. Even without doing that it was pretty gnarly. Bounce backs are common. Written up better here than I could:

i have been an investor since the late 1980s .

every new high is a bubble waiting to pop.

every decline is the proverbial crash
