Another great Iowa book is The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid. It's also by Bryson, and it's his memoir of growing up in Des Moines in the 1950s. So funny!

I also recomend this book being a Bill Bryson nut,now I have actually been there I now can identify some of the places in his book . "Notes from a Small Island" about England he starts off by saying"I was born in Des Moines, well someone had to!"Tongue in cheek I hope. The bit in the Thunderbolt Kid which is upsetting is that The Des Moines Register had thousand of photos of DM and from the old days and just through them out, thats really sad

I think Bill Bryson's views on Iowa have changed over the years. That first line in the lost continent makes me wince and say "ouch!" But when he's driving back through iowa he says he says "I felt guilty for mocking them. They're good people.

When you're reading the thunderbolt kid, there's nothing negative about Iowa at all, and it seems like he looks at his home state fondly.

Just my thoughts
