Very interesting thought, Woodrow. Because some people attach a religious significance to a Christmas tree and the ornaments on it, you are opposed to having a Christmas tree in your house. Did I get that right?

Assume some society worshipped a coffee pot. Would that mean you would not have a coffee pot in your house?

I did not carry my thought far enough. It is because I see a religious significance to Christmas trees, most Christmas decorations etc. Not because my neighbor or someone else sees such.

If I did not associate them with a religious practice, I would have no qualms decorating the house. But I do see them as a religious practice that I do not agree with, so my house does not have them.

Why do you "see a religious significance to Christmas trees"?

It is not part of your religion any more than a coffee pot.

Wouldn't the same thing be true for your coffee pot? Isn't it true that worshipping a coffee pot is something that you do not agree with?

I'll blame it on my childhood. To my family Christmas along with it's decorations was very much a religious experience. In my home Christmas very much about worship.

Even after learning the actual origins of the celebration and decorations I have been unable to shake the religious connotations.

Call it one of my left over pieces of excessive baggage.

^^^

Thus, in celebration of the Birth of Jesus (Christmas), we have:
+ A tree (remembrance of what Jesus did on the cross which is called a tree).
+ Lights and ornaments (representational of the glory, and wonder of what Jesus did on the cross).
+ A star at the top, representing the star that was above Jesus Christ at his birth time.
+ Often a nativity scene, which is a model that depicts the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas time.
+ And we give gifts (God gave us the gift of Jesus on his birth, the wise men gave Jesus birthday presents, and Jesus gave us the gift of salvation on the tree. We continue in the tradition by following in the joy of giving gifts.)

Since Muslims believe in Christ, I see no reason why they can't celebrate the birth of the Messiah and Prophet. However, it makes no sense celebrating Easter.

We do not celebrate nor venerate any man. Or more correctly we should not. We are even discouraged from celebrating Muhammad(saaws)'s birthday although some do.

We have 2 celebrations Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha neither of which honor nor venerate any man.

Now you are making sense Woodrow. I understand what you are saying, but I wouldn't call it excessive baggage. It doesn't appear to be weighing you down.

There was no religious teaching in my childhood, but we always had a nice Christmas tree, so it is just one of the customs I grew up with.
