My friend says property taxes in Mississippi are very low--is that true?? I am planning to move to the Jackson area one day. I will probably live in the suburbs outside Jackson. Unfortunately, someone tried to show me a very nice house that was incredibly "low priced" but it was on Jefferson St. near Bellvue and the neighborhood looked hideous! Is that typical for that area of Jackson?? I guess that's downtown? Anyhoo. I visited the state several times and really look forward to retiring around that area (Hinds County). I am Black & female and own a business (will be working from home).

Property taxes are relatively low, however, we make up for it in high priced car tags and state income taxes, which some states don't have. In the end, the tax man always gets his share...some just get theirs in different forms than others.

In the other thread you posted:

I want privacy, peace and a quiet life.
If that's the case, I'd suggest staying out of the Jackson city limits. The property taxes are considerably higher (car tags also) than much of the surrounding area, and much of Jackson would be considered a dump by most, although there are some nice areas. You can search the link below by county. If you want to be near Jackson, I'd suggest Madison or Rankin counties, and some areas of Hinds (Clinton, for example).

i live in Washignton county and have a 2400 sq ft house on 4 acres. my taxes are 1200.00 a YEAR, so probably much lower than your monthly PT in CA. tag on my '04 dodge truck is maybe 150.00 since i live outside city limits. both of these taxes would be double if i lived in town. and both could be either higher or lower if i lived in another county.

WOW!! Thanks both of you for answering.

Glad to know that moving outside Jackson itself would lower taxes/costs considerably.

Hey Spaceship....

Would never - ever - ask a lady her age, but........if you are 65 or older you get a huge reduction in Real estate taxes. At least in most counties.

Car tags can be expensive, but if you are conservative like me you will have an older car in great shape and be taxed far, far, less. Friend just bought a top-of-the-line Chevy pickup and paid 800 for tags. I drive a 90 model pickup (pristine, thank you) and pay 25$/year.
I love my truck.

No. I'm nowhere near 65, haha.

WOW on the tags. That's awful. But I already knew.

Bummer.
