Thanks both of you for the history of Jews in the South. It is interesting. I feel like Jacksonville was one of those first line places for Jews, Arabs, and even Cubans to go to when they first came to America, and as a result, all of the Jewish, Arab, and Cuban families here are so integrated into Jax society you can't even tell their heritage at first glance any more. It seems like only in the last 40 years have other FL and southern cities exploded with immigrant populations so they're more visible elsewhere.

For at least 100 years Jacksonville was THE city in Florida. So any one coming to Florida would end up in Jax or at least passing thru. Jax was to Florida like Atlanta is to GA now. Miami really didnt come up until the 1920s heck it was founded in 1896. You can see that in the old county numbers on our tags based on 1937 population. Dade was 1, Duval was 2, Hillsborough was 3. Orange was 6 or 7 I believe. You can see these numbers if you get a ticket, there is spot for county number.

Thats why in some ways Jax is like some of the older NE cities like Baltimore or NYC

Just as with immigration to other areas there was a few from mostly Ramallah on the West Bank and other relatives and neighbors from the "old country" came to be near someone they knew. (My Great-grandparents came from the Ukraine and went to Steubenville OH to be near his brother--thankfully they moved back to NJ)

As far as Filipinos Jax has one of the largest filipino poulations in the US, along with San Diego and Tidewater of Virginia-- yes the navy.
Very interesting the connections between the US Navy & Philipines...I say good for Jacksonville. Growing up in Jacksonville one would think Filipinos (Asians) are in every city. In Atlanta the main asain group is Koreans. I think Seattle or San Fran has the most asians overall though.

Koreans they practically run the weave business, where there is black women, you will find Koreans. Arabs are big in the convienat store/gas station biz. Asian Indians are also in that biz. Nail Salons....Im not too sure about. I believe they are Chinese.

Jacksonville was the first major city in Florida, the oldest city in the country is apart of our metropolitian area. I definitely support the idea of connecting the two downtowns with some form of commuter rail.

On topic, we know that there are many filipinos in the Jacksonville city, are there any other asian groups that have a large presence here?
