I have rarely stayed in Jax much less "explored" it. However, I am a minor league baseball fanatic and have recently made plans to take my family to a Suns game in July. We will probably stay near the beach for obvious reasons, but I have to say I am somewhat disappointed that there is no reported "night life" near the Baseball Grounds. I was hoping to walk around the city a little before or after the game. Is this a bad idea?
This is one of the few southern minor league teams I have yet to see play. Can someone give me more details about the surrounding area, please. Is it safe? What about parking? Are there any close by restaurants?

It seems funny to me that a city that hosted the Superbowl a few years ago hasn't expanded on that. Jax could be a major sports town in the south. all of the sporting facilities seem to be relatively close to each other.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

That's too bad. It would be a great revenue generator for businesses and hotels downtown, especially if it (the sports facilities) were in walking distance via the river walk. I'm still going to the Suns' game this July. I plan on doing a lot of exploring around Jax. NE Florida is my favorite part of the sunshine state. Being a native Atlantan, we visit the area quite often.

The new stadium is really nice (I've been to a few games there). But it's kind of in the middle of nowhere - especially considering that it's downtown . Not unsafe (I wouldn't think twice about walking around there before/during/after a game). But totally boring IMO. Note that I am 65 and my husband is 68 - and we don't carry concealed weapons .

If you have more than a few dollars for this trip - spend your night(s) up at the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island (it has good kid stuff). If you're a golfer - head for the Marriott at Sawgrass and play at the TPC. Robyn

Jacksonville is exceptional, however. We've made the top 100 most dangerous cities for at least 2 years recently.

Yeah, we've had the highest murder rate in the state for like a dozen years running. A man was shot in his car at the east end of Alden Rd. early Thursday morning. Last I heard he was in critical condition. Hey..., that's my neighborhood!!

Hmmm yes, Jacksonville is exceptional It's the #1 largest city area wide in the USA and its the #12th ranked city by population in the USA. Go figure why it's ranked in the top 100 most dangerous cities. I'm impressed it's not in the top 10 most dangerous cities !
