It got me to wondering, what if you move and just don't change your state of residence with the auto insurance company? If you had an accident in FL, couldn't you just say you were traveling on vacation?

Don't forget registration costs. In CA I was paying well over $200.00 per car (older cars) and in TN all are at $24.00, unless I have a special plate. What is the FL cost?

Ouch, that'e enough disposable income to pay off a house 3-7 years faster (depending on term and rate).
Do your thing but I imagine you also have a seperate cell service too?

We will stick to FREE library, HULU and VH1 viewing. Granted we will have to pay someone for internet, hopefully less than $40/mo, unless we limit or viewing time to FREE wifi locations on our cell. LOL

There's nothing controversial. We have very high numbers of uninsured drivers - so UM coverage is very expensive.

Also - we have lots of "fender bender" accidents. And cars cost a lot to repair these days - even after minor accidents. So 3rd party property damage/1st party comprehensive coverage are expensive too.

FWIW - I see some people here carrying very minimal liability limits. Not wise IMO unless you don't make doddle and don't have a "pot to pi** in" so to speak. Minimum recommended for most higher middle class people IMO is $250/$500k with a minimum of a $1 million umbrella on top of that.

Our total premium is $880/year for just about maximum coverage on a 2010 Lexus. And - of that - only about $370 or so is liability coverage. We're with State Farm. I'm sure we could save some dollars going with another company. But then we'd be hunting around for another (probably lesser) homeowners' policy. And we'd have a lot of problems finding another company that would sell us a $5 million umbrella policy. Robyn

Initial cost in Florida is somewhat high now IIRC. But annual costs are no big deal (about $70/year IIRC). Robyn

You could say it - but you would basically be screwed unless you could prove it. Robyn

We have "no-fault" (have had it for decades) - and PIP only costs us $52/year (out of $880). We're happy paying $880/year (would probably cost us 50% more in south Florida). Robyn

I actually just switched to Allstate. I was using State Farm but their rates kept creeping up on me.

Not specific to you. But people who have State Farm Florida for auto and homeowners' can reasonably expect to lose their State Farm homeowners' coverage if they switch auto carriers to save a few dollars. Maybe not tomorrow - or next year. Just when State Farm decides to reduce the number of homeowners' policies it has in Florida again. Robyn
