Just would like an honest average monthly cost for these utilities, plan on moving from PA next year and trying to get a budget together. I heard the cost of living is cheaper in Florida.

Phone I pay 60
Cable/Directv 70
Gas/Heat summer 50, fall winter 70-200
Electric - winter 60, summer with AC 90
Water - 35
Garbage sticker/bags $1 per year and $7 for 52 bags

Also car/homeowners insurance, property/school taxes....... Can't think of anything else, thanks

Really difficult to assess any of this without more info. Buying / Renting? How big a place do you need? Where do you want to be? St. John's County, Duval, Clay, Nassau?

I an addtion to the size of your place... how many people will be living there?

To give you some idea... Me and my husband in a 3/2 Southside 1700 sq ft.

Comcast (Internet/Cable) $95
JEA (Will soon be going up slightly) $85-90 winter $110- 120 summer/spring-- that includes electric heat/air and water (about $20 of that bill). We keep our house around 73, we like it cold and have septic for sewage

We don't have a phone line, just cell phones. Until just recently we have not paid for trash/recycle. Now we are being sent approx $60 bills on this, which is for the year, this figure depends on some variables. We have a whole thread on here about the Storm water and Solid Waste bill that was just sent out.

1000 square feet - even in an older, less insulated house - should be very affordable. If you're even just somewhat reasonable about your electric and water usage, you should be able to cover all of your electric/water/sewer for $100 or so each month for 2 people in 1000 sq ft (I've had one of these tiny houses myself ).

I don't know about Direct TV, but for cable + broadband you could plan on about $120/mo. (Comcast covers most of Jax).

A cell phone plan for 2 people should be $60-$70.

Garbage is a new, separate fee for us and it comes with our Stormwater bill (brand new deal ). I think it's supposed to be roughly $60/year, but who knows? The whole thing is s such a mess, read here:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/jacks...tormwater.html

Homeowners insurance depends on so many factors, but just to throw a number out there, I'd budget $1000.

For property taxes, use this estimator here:

Duval County Property Appraiser - Tax Estimator (http://apps.coj.net/PAO/Tax_Calc/ - broken link)

We just moved from MD! Our house is 1284 sqft and our electric bill has been CRAZY since we got here in Feb. Our bill last month for water & electric was a little over $200 and we keep the house at 76. We water with well water. I do stay home so someone is home pretty much all day every day.

Our Direct TV bill is about $80, we have the midrange package, 3 receivers, and HD.

The thing that got us the most was our Auto insurance! We have USAA and our insurance was going to more than double a month! We had to increase all our deductables except the newest car and there was something else we took off that helped. Talk with your insurance company about ways to bring it down, and you may want to shop around.

Our phone bill is just under $100/month and we have the AT&T Bundle, home phone w/ unlimited long distance, almost all the calling features like call waiting, caller id, ect. We also have the upgraded DSL, not the fastest, but not the slowest either. And we are supposed to get a discount with DirecTv, but not sure if I've seen that yet.

Like someone else said, they are just starting to bill for trash pickup & stormwater bill that will most likely be about $60.

Welcome to Jax! Hope you like it HOT!!!

Wow!! I hope you are at least using Compact Fluorescent bulbs. If not, invest in them! Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs : ENERGY STAR
Also, it helps to wash clothes with cold water.

You have yet to see hot, wait until June-August!

Actually, I have switched out most of the bulbs to flourescent bulbs and do most of my wash in cold! Except for my cloth diapers which I HAVE to wash in hot.

I'm not quite sure what is going on, because our bill shouldn't be THAT high! JEA wasn't very good at sending our bills anyway! They had them going to the wrong address so we didn't get a bill for almost 2 months! Thankfully I called to ask since we hadn't gotten a bill and owed over $300 and they wanted it all in the next bill!! Weren't very open to spreading them out over a couple months either. But that's another story!

I'm just trying to watch it and see what the next month holds!

Beth

JEA really isn't that great. Maybe have an A/C company check out your unit, make sure there are no gaps around your doors and check the seals on your doors/windows. Also, fans will cost less to run constantly than your A/C and will take strain off the unit. We keep 2 of ours in main parts of the house on low all the time. Hopefully, it will get better!
