Hello Everyone!

What is everyone doing to cut gas consumption? I mean any ideas ? We are already driving very less but what else could be done?

I bought a Hybrid last year.

Here are some things that I do:

Don't turn the AC to the coldest temperature.

Don't gun the gas when you're at the light - the 'winner' only gets to buy more fuel.

Plan your trips around town. Do not just 'run to the store' for 1 or 2 items. Plan ahead.

Ride a bike. If no bike, then run. If you cannot run, walk. If you cannot walk, have someone push you.

"cruise" when going downhill.

Use mass transportation (oops, I forgot where we live) - scratch that.

Use your friend's/mother's/father's/uncle's/cousin's car.

Get rid of your gas guzzling pickup truck/SUV/Large automobile.

Is it legal to turn off your car at a redlight in Florida? If so, then you should think about doing that when you're at a redlight for more than eight seconds- according to gassavers.org. You waste more gas when the car idles (8+ seconds) than you would if you have to re-start it. However, you can't crank and re-start too many times, because it'll drain the battery. The max is four times unless you've been driving continuously for a while. That's what I remember when my friend was really into gas pinching.

OMG, I will lose my mind if people start turning their engines off at the light!

It's bad enough when they take a nap just before the light turns green, but now their car is going to be turned off too??

I believe it's also illegal to put your car in neutral when going downhill. Oh wait. This is Florida. We don't have any hills.

Turning off the engine at red lights has been common in large European cities for years. A yellow light prior to the returning green light signals you to start your engines! Of course, gasoline prices have been sky high there for years.

I drive a Honda Civic and get like 30+ miles to the gallon. I try to ride with my AC off sometimes, never "race" off the light, and definitely strategically map out my errands. Since I drive a standard, I also coast in neutral a lot. My guy drives a truck, so we take my car on errands across town and out to dinner. That is about all I can do . . .

It still takes me a little over $30 to fill up my ~8 gallon tank. Used to take only $22. Since I fill up twice a month, I'm spending $20 more a month on average. On a student's budget, it's killing me. Especially since groceries are on the rise too . . .
