Our house is about 3000 sf. We keep the heat at 72 all day - and our bill in January was about $500 - $100 more than same period last year. Sounds like you need an "energy audit". First things to check are the A/C duct work in the attic (single largest source of energy loss in Florida is leaks there) and the A/C unit itself. Don't know if your power company will go up in your attic to check your duct seals for leaks. If not - you need a good HVAC company (we use Ocean State and like it). Second and third things to check are the hot water heater - and leaks around windows/doors.

FWIW - we run a couple of room humidifiers in the winter. Makes things more comfortable when the heat is on. Robyn

thanks for your replies, Im in a rental and landlords dont seem very motivated to get it checked, even though we shell out a hefty 1,500 to them each month for the last yr. and 1/2. Im looking for a lease/rent to own to get out from under the huge elect. bills. My husbands identity was stolen and it seems it is a long process to repair.
