I tell them I went back to college (which I did). I'm almost aggravated on the interviews I've been on because there still seems to be a stigma about resume gaps. I know MANY people who have been unemployed for a year or more and they weren't in school or dealing with anything. I wonder how things fare for them. It's as though these employers are ignoring the fact that we are in the worst recession of the century.
Employers don't care why you have GAPS so either you find a way to fix your resume or continue to be unemployed.
Just like a girl won't care why a guy is unemployed when looking for a mate. Make adjustments
You would think so right? They don't like that answer though. They are NEVER satisified. They expect that EVERYONE should be working full-time, consecuitively, since the day they turned 16.

it is actually sickening that the working world has this phobia about not working for periods of time, I mean its not a life or death situation, give me a break !!
It's an employers' market right now, more than ever. This isn't your grandaddy's Great Depression. This is seriously brutal out here for the average (non Ivy League, F500) person. I say fight fire with fire. My one year anniversary of being unemployed is going to be June 1, 2011. I have sent out hundreds of resumes, cover letters, applied online, "networked," went door to door in my neighborhood and surrounding areas, cold emailed/faxed, I HAVE TRIED IT ALL SHORT OF JUMPING THROUGH HOOPS AND JUGGLING. I have a 4 year college degree, tons of computer skills, type 60 wpm, 15 years of work experience. I dress pro, speak pro and speak several languages. I have even dumbed down my resume for the lower tier type jobs. BUT THEY ARE LIKE STUPID RETARDED SHEEP WHO ARE STUCK ON THAT GAP. Half of these people who interview me need brain lobotomies.
Do what you gotta do. Survive. Nothing else matters.

Maybe you have to learn how to juggle. At least you could put a cup for change out on the street.
I'm employed, fortunately, but it really does suck out there. A friend of mine finally found an admin asst job after more than a year of searching, and now my sister just lost her job last week. She's in IT, and has her master's, and there are just no jobs. And she is 50. Like you, these are people with skills and degrees. I sincerely hope something comes up for you soon.

Its really scary when the ones interviewing us for jobs *and reject us* can't even think for themselves and they are rejecting us when we can see right through them...
There are far too many to pick from, which means only one true solution exists. We need uber low business payroll-related taxes, to reduce the cost of hiring, thus changing the supply/demand ratio.
