I interviewed for a position about a month and a half ago. I went through 3 rounds and did well until I had to meet the boss lady as the final step. The boss seemed like a real bit#@ for lack of a better word, but I didn't care. I just wanted to get the job and the experience would've been good for my resume. The company was quick about getting back to me up to that point but they still have not formally rejected me. I followed up a week after I was supposed to hear back, and I got a delayed "we will let you know as soon as a decision has been made" message. This was from a junior level guy who seemed to want me on the team but it seemed as if he felt bad about sending me a rejection so he skirted around it. I waited and waited because they know where I stand. I never heard back. It has been 3 weeks since I received that update response email from him.

It's most likely gone. but there was a time when a job took about 3 weeks to get back to me but they did give me the job. come to think of it, I was a little bitter about it. still, it was a good job and soon I forgot all about the delay.

Follow up too much and you become a pest. If you are still in the running at that point it could cost you the job. It may take time for the background check on the person selected, making an offer, an many employers will wait until the new person shows up the first day before notifying those not selected, just in case they have to go to #2 or 3. I'd wait at least another week, then if you get no answer move on.
