Greetings!

First time poster here, I've been reading some good threads/posts here about valuable information about moving to KC so I thought I'd give it a go!

I'm a young, single professional that will be working for a company in St. Joseph, MO in about a month. I wasn't that all impressed by St. JO so I thought I would try see what KC had to offer.

From what I read, renting downtown would be a safe bet for the young, single life. I figured the commute would be around 45min to an hour from KC. I've experience much worse commutes but anything further is pushing it.

I've also read that more north of KC is a good option too. Less commute, half way point and I can get away from the city when I want. Problem is I'm very active, love sports, going out, meeting new people, drinking etc (I lived in DC for a year) and feel as if the suburbs would bore me. I like safety (although I can fend for myself well enough), and cost is not really a problem (anywhere from $800-$1000 rent).

Anyone got any thoughts/revelations for me??

Thanks and have a great day!

-Jordon

I have known people who do the KC to St. Joe commute, and if you are fine with 45 minutes to an hour drive time, that seems like it may be your best option.

As for the half way point, there really isn't much between the northern suburbs of KC and St. Joe - just rural farm land. You could go with the very northern suburbs of KC and that might cut your commute down to around 30 minutes. However, for a young person who likes to socialize and drink, I think you would be happier in the Downtown area if you are fine with commuting 15-20 minutes longer.

I would recommend checking out the River Market, as well as Downtown and the Crossroads. You could also go a bit further south to areas like Westport and the Plaza and still probably make it to St. Joe in an hour.

Right now I'm leaning towards downtown (around River Market). Could be fun living around that area.

I'm not very familiar with that area. Is that a good young professional scene?

The demographics of the River Market is definitely high on young professionals, but I'm not sure how well it would qualify as a "scene". There are a couple bars and a hand full of restaurants, but it is not a bustling night-life center. If that is what you are looking for, you would need to head to central downtown for the Power and Light District, or further south to Westport.

Were I looking for access to an entertainment district, living in River Market and going out in P&L and Crossroads would be plenty close enough for me. I have lived literally on top of an entertainment district before, and it's annoying and noisy. I think living in River Market would allow easy access to entertainment without having to live in the middle of it.
