I hope it's okay to ask this question on here. I live in KC and love going down to the City Market. I love the diversity there. I also like getting fresh fruits and vegetables there during the spring and summer months. On the outer areas of the market there is tons of fruits and vegetables. They have really reasonable prices, but the problem is that they never want to say where the stuff came from. What the heck??? I asked a lady that worked there yesterday where the fruit I had bought came from. She looked at me like I was stupid. I said, "You can't tell me where this came from can you?", and she said "No!" That's a little scary to not know where your food came from. Does anybody know? And why is it a big friggin' secret???

Here's what I have noticed while shopping at City Market. I think that the produce that comes from the outer ring that isn't inside the actual booths is from a wholesaler that you could buy at Price Chopper. If you buy from the farmers they will be happy to tell you. I personally would not buy the produce from the people that sell right outside of the restaurants and indoor shops.

Exactly. Actually a lot of what is sold at the city market is stuff the grocery store chains don't want or won't pass their standards, but it comes from the same places. Go out behind the stalls and look at the trash bins and trucks. They are the same trucks and boxes that you will see at area groceries.

That’s not a bad thing. It’s one of the reasons the city market “can” be cheaper and it’s a way to sell produce that otherwise might go to waste.

Yup, if you want something that's highly likely to be home-grown by the vendor selling it, shop the inner booths and stands.

There's also one in Brookside on Saturday mornings that benefits the PTA for the Border Star Montessori school. Lots of plants for gardens, but there are a few stands with tasty fresh-baked bread.
