Kansas City has it's own income tax of 1% on top of the 6% state tax, why? I know, I know.....because they can, I've never heard of a city imposing an income tax.

What other nasty tax surprises will I be expecting in KCMO? What is the sale tax rate? Do they tax food? Car tax?

Tony

I believe New York City also has their own income tax.
I would also like more info on the KC income tax. Is it for people who work and live in KC, or does it apply to anyone who works in KC, regardless of where they live?

The 1% tax applies if you work or live in KC. Only one condition is needed in order to make it a requirement.

Follow up question: What about North Kansas City? Same thing? Not sure if it is its own city or just a section of KC.

North Kansas City is its own city and does not have the 1% earnings tax. We live in Liberty (with a Liberty address) and my husband works in North Kansas City. So, we do not pay the 1% earnings tax.

Does this 1% apply in both KCMO and KCK ?
The reason I ask is because I'm starting a business and the office I'll be working out of is in Kansas City, KS. Is it to my advantage to live on the KS side of town as well ?
Being from TX where there's no person income tax and no personal property tax paid except on homes I'm at a loss here.
Thanks for the help.

I'm sorry to be redundant. I just don't get it. We're relocating and my husband will be working in KSMO. We had heard that it is stupid to move to KCK in this situation, and to instead only focus on the Liberty, Gladstone areas. How big of a difference is there in taxation? For instance, if you live on the Missouri side, and presumably have less taxes, does it come and get you in other ways anyway? I guess what I'm asking is does it all even out in the end? I've heard there's an automobile tax? So far, I must admit, that's the craziest thing I've ever heard. Is that only in MO, or does that apply for KS as well? Any clarification on all of this would really be appreciated, as it is a little confusing to us. Thanks so much for any responses!!!

Sorry about your confusion...here goes. If you live or work in the city limits of Kansas City, Missouri, you are required to pay the 1% earnings tax (they will come for you) If you work in any other municipality KCK, NKC and don't live in the KCMO city limits you aren't required to pay the earnings tax. As for "car tax", Jackson county has a personal property tax which you must pay on cars, boats, ATVs (basically anything you need to license) before you can register or license the vehicle. I don't know about Cass, Clay or Platte counties in Missouri. Does that help?

It helped a great deal, loudestchick! Thank you!

Although I'm sure it exists elsewhere, I never heard of the property tax. If you buy a $25K car, how much tax do you pay? Does it happen every year, or only that once when you purchase the vehicle ... or each time you renew registration?

Sales tax is paid when you purchase the vehicle but personal property tax hits you every year. As for how much...I have no clue.
