The Kansas Forest Service budget for 2016 was about $3 million, while the Oklahoma Forestry Service budget was about $87 million.

Fire has lessons for officials in Kansas, Oklahoma | The Wichita Eagle

IMHO, and I had Clinton Owensby for KSU Range Mgmt, fire is an integral tool of range mgmt. & Kansas is getting what it's willing to pay for. I've witnessed burns on Konza Prairie from up close. There are lots of people involved. Some years back, a burn jumped Hwy 177's 4 lanes & median between Konza & KSU's grazing pastures on the East side of 177. Fire fighters had never seen it do that before!

I have no idea how small ranchers staff controlled burns. I would guess there's quite a demand on days ranchers suddenly decide is the day to burn.

Riley County has a moratorium on fires other than to burn pastures during the month of April.

Our air quality in Sioux Falls seems normal. The AQI today was 49. Hadn't heard anything on the weather forecasts about air quality. By far, the biggest issues we have with air quality are from Canadian and far West wildfires blowing our direction.
