My wife and I currently live in Orlando - FL and are thinking about moving somewhere in Kentucky. We are visiting at the end of August for 5 days and are looking for ideas about where to go and what to see. We both have professional jobs so we would need to live near a city where there are opportunities for employment. However, we do not want to live in the city. The main reason we are looking at Kentucky is we want to own plenty of land in an area that will be safe for our upcoming children and be good for our two dogs. So our focus is on smaller communities outside larger cities. We don't mind commuting to work. The areas we are planning to visit are Lexington, Louisville, Frankfort, and Covington. Can anyone suggest specific areas around these cities that we should either visit or stay away from? We appreciate any help you all can give. Thanks.
Joel and Lauren

You bet I can. We moved from Tampa two years ago and looked for two years before we settled on an area in KY. We live in Breckinridge county, which is 1 hr. SW of Louisville. It is the best place for low crime, low taxes and low property prices. It is an easy drive to Louisville and many people work there that live here. You can also work at Ft. Knox, Elizabethtown, Brandenburg, Owensboro, and Hardinsburg.

I'm guessing you want to be closer than an hour to your employment. (Although Breckenridge Co is very pretty.)

I'd suggest you look in the eastern and northeastern area of Jefferson County. 30 minutes to downtown Louisville, good selection of nice houses with 5 acres, plenty of great shopping, restaurants, etc.

What kind of acreage, home and most importantly how much $$$ are you looking to spend? That is going to make a big difference in where you look.

I know in our county we don't have tax information on line but I can tell you what we paid in Breckinridge county. We have a newer brick home & 20 acres and also 60 acres in another part of the county and we only paid under $1000 for each on taxes in 2006. We are incredibly surprised and delighted by the difference between Florida and Kentucky. I think we even save money at Kroger's versus Publix in Florida. Even beer is cheaper here!

We are looking for at least 2 acres but would really like to have more. For price we would like to stay below $230k. We don't mind a little longer commute as we already have a 45 minute each way. If we can get a shorter commute that would just be a bonus. Thanks for all the replys.

Believe it or not, you can get a very nice place with more than two acres in the rural sections of Kentucky and keep your 45 minute drive. The prices are so great in Kentucky. Looking on realtor.com didn't help us at all when we were looking as you have to pick a particular city to look instead of searching statewide. If you go to google or yahoo or any search engine and type in Kentucky acreage for sale, you can find many helpful sites.

I would def recommend looking into Richmond (Madison county) It has much of what you're talking about as far as land, not so big city, and quick commute to food, grocery, etc.

There are many great suburbs/small towns around Louisville. The best are Crestwood, La Grange, Shepherdsville, Shelbyville, Pewee Valley, and Prospect. Floyds Knobs and Georgetown Indiana are also great options. In Louisville Jefferson County there are still many viable suburbs with lots of land that are safe. I agree with Offtopic, and I think you would like NE Jefferson County (Louisville) too.
