The job market in basically all of East Tennessee or Southwest Virginia is depressed and there really isn't much debating that. That is why I moved away. I grew up in Bristol, VA and I assumed that I would be able to find something worthwhile in JC/Bristol/Kingsport eventually but I really couldn't find anything. I ended up moving to Phoenix after I graduated from UVA-Wise and I worked there for four years until I was transferred to Lincoln, NE with my current company. I always check my companies directory for jobs in the Tri-Cities and so far the closest thing I have found is Chattanooga, TN or Roanoke, VA...neither of which I have any interest in. If I could find a job that paid something comparable or even a little less I'd move back immediately. The COL is fairly low plus my wife and I are frugal people. To me, there's just something special about the Tri-Cities area....I guess I'll just keep checking the job boards!

Just looking at the jobs posted and salary range is not enough. There are job openings here that are never filled or will go to local/friends/family. Having freshly moved here and looking at the postings compared to what positions are actually hired for, well there is definitely a gap. Moving here without a lot of planning or without job in place can be devastating to you. You need to have great planning and an exit plan just in case.

That being said, this area is beautiful, friendly and the weather is great. Good luck to you.
