Hello to everyone who already knows of me & to those who don't. We're coming to visit in a couple of weeks & our vacation can't come soon enough! This is a visit to help us decide whether we should retire to Kingsport or Knoxville in two years. I'd appreciate any suggestions to make our stay most enjoyable. We will be there either Aug.31-Sept.4th or Sept. 7th-Sept.11th. I appreciate ideas about places to stay, eat, things not to miss, things to stay away from, any special things going on in town. We will be driving down from Wi, but are making an overnight stop in Indiana. Thanks!

That's a long drive from WI.... we just drove to northern WI for our son's wedding. I was really happy to get out of that car when we got home!

If you are coming to look at Kingsport, then I'm guessing you'll want to stay in Kingsport. I had a client who stayed at the Quality Inn & Conference Center - they were not very impressed. I've had clients who have stayed at the Hampton Inn and Comfort Inn who were happy with both. The Hampton Inn is on the edge of Kingsport just off of I-26 (but not that far from downtown). The Comfort Inn is closer to shopping, restaurants, etc.

While you're in town you may want to take a walk on the greenbelt along the river, see Bays Mountain Park and Warriors Path State Park or drive out to Watauga Lake (view from Wilbur Dam is beautiful) or Roan Mountain State Park. A trip to Jonesborough is definitely worth the drive or drive out to Unicoi County for some beautiful mountain views. Erwin also has a nice walking trail. There are lots of options to keep you busy!

Lot of restaurants too!! Some of my favs in Kingsport are 12 Bones, Kingsport Grocery Co., Thomy Thai's, Cootie Browns, Cheddars, Pratts has a good home style lunch buffet and Rush Street has a good pizza buffet for lunch. You've gotta have a Pals tea and if you really want to clog your arteries go to the Purple Cow - if it can be fried... they will fry it!

Hope this helps. Have a great trip down to TN!!

Thanks for your input Actually we were going to stay at the Best Western on Ft. Henry Drive. Any thoughts about that motel? We will want to take time out to play disc golf in Kingsport & Johnson City, so Warriors Path State Park is a must! The greenbelt is something that draws me to Kingsport over Johnson City, as well as the lower median home cost. Deciding between Kingsport & Knoxville might be a difficult choice, they both have different things going for them.
The other places you suggested to drive to will be put on my list as long as I get a good long hard look at what living in Kingsport will be like first.
Thanks for restaurant ideas also, eating on vacation allows us to eat things we know we shouldn't be eating

If you will be in Kingsport on Thursday and/or Friday night, be sure to check out the free concerts in the evenings on Broad street in downtown. (They are summer only and I believe they will still be going on then.) Here is the link to the schedule, you can keep an eye on it as your trip gets closer.

Sorry, have no knowledge of the Best Western. If you come to Johnson City to play disc golf at Winged Deer, you'll be just down the road from my house. Just a few miles from Winged Deer is Rocky Mount - which was the territorial capital in the late 1790's. It is now a living history museum.

Looks like Aug.29th is the last concert. Guess I just missed that option. Thanks for the idea though.

Well, I must admist I've never played disc golf so I have not been to the course. I do like to walk on the paths there. I would be in walking distance if they would build a bridge across the lake and flatten out a couple of hills! Until then, guess I'll keep driving.

Howdy neighbor (kind of). I could throw a rock to Winged Deer.

Hi neighbor. You may be a little closer if you can throw a rock!
