Im from LI too, and even in winter, loved walks on the beach.

Lake Watauga here is nice, but in its like apples and oranges (and I went to school at Syracuse, Lake Ontario much bigger than lakes here).

Watauga Lake is actually what drew us to this part of the world in the first place! After looking at minimally attractive lakes all over North Carolina, the moment we drove over the Butler bridge we were captivated by its pristine beauty and the gorgeous mountains rising above it.

Anyone who grows up near the ocean or a nice lake, I think always tries to replicate that kind of setting in where they ultimately choose to live. Like dreamofmonterrey I grew up close to Long Island Sound and spent part of my summer on a beautiful lake in Maine. So when we discovered Watauga it was kind of a magical moment. One thing that makes Watauga so special is the lack of development on or near the lake, largely due of course to the fact that the Cherokee National Forest surrounds and protects it. The other thing is all the lovely rustic parks where you can swim, fish, have a picnic or launch a boat. Watauga Lake is truly the jewel of this area!
