With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I want to take my date out for a night on the town in Knoxville... I'm thinking a romantic dinner somewhere we can dress up to start (we have a few other occasions to celebrate too, so I'm looking past Feb 14 itself)...

Any recommendations?

For example, I was told Brazeiros is great for special occasions but we'd be out of place in anything nicer than jeans (bummer 'cause we love meat) - is this true? Does Knoxville have dressy "special occasion" places anymore (Regas was always my go-to place... still can't believe they closed)?

I love to dress up and definitely don't think you'd be out of place at Bistro by the Tracks, Chesapeake's, Cappuncino's/Copper Cellar, (if you can get in) Le Conte.

You could dress up at Brazeiros. In fact although it is very acceptable to wear jeans there most people wear something a step above.

Other wonderful restaurants on par with Regas - I don't even want to talk about their closing it saddens me so! - would be The Orangery, Bistro by the Tracks, Le Parigo, Ruth Chris, Connor's, Fleming's, Chesapeake's, Lakeside Tavern, Bistro at the Bijou and Echo.

That is not a definitive list. Further, know that the people of Knoxville are so gracious that you could easily where what you want and no one would glance sidewards.

I will tell you that one of the most romantic spots is one of the two tiny, private dining spots at Naples Restaurant. They are really just enclosed booths but I've always wanted to try it!
