A mitigating factor, too, is what you get for your tax money. As a resident of Knox County who is outside the city limits, I have to contract for my own trash removal, bulk item removal when needed and fire protection (which was a shock to me for such a developed county). These services are provided by the City of Knoxville to their residents. Even with the added expenses, my overall cost is still less.....but not as much less as the tax rate might lead one to believe.

Again thanks for the information. I had heard that about other areas, without the city taxes you are liable for trash pickup etc. But I also did the quick math and that does not add up to the additional taxes in Maryville City, Johnson City proper etc.

You may still pay a little bit for trash collection and services like that. You’ll probably pay a lot less than Waste Management or something, but at least where I’ve been hasn’t been free.

Trash pick up here is $240/year, can't imagine it's a whole lot more down there.

Standard weekly collection from Waste Management is more than that - much more. It’s around $50-$60/month (bulled quarterly) for my parents in the unincorporated county.

I have Tennessee Trash, which recently became affiliated with Waste Management. They swear this will not cause our rates to soar, but we will see. I currently pay $56 a QUARTER for standard trash collection in Knox County.

Yeah that's more of what I was thinking, we pay $60/quarter which is how I got my $240 annual figure. I have no idea what fire department services cost but obviously you need that too. If it's really $50/month I'll load it in my truck and drive to the dump.

I'd really sit down and crunch the numbers on this.

When I lived in the city, I paid $9/month for trash and limb pickup at the curb. Waste Management is pushing $50-$60/month here. That trash difference could be close to county/city tax difference. A landfill will typically charge so much per load.

"Here" for Serious Conversation is Kingsport, wondering if others from Maryville or Knoxville can chime in on local trash pickup costs there.

Our fire protection is from a company called Rural Metro. The rate is based on square footage. I pay $315 a year. It is really a terrible arrangement because only 40 percent of people in Knox County subscribe. The non-subscribers are gambling that they will never have a fire. If they do, Rural Metro will respond and then send them a big bill, but in the meantime, they are free riding on the backs of the rest of us. This is a completely outdated system for a county as developed as Knox. Here is an article about it: https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/...ts/3143269002/
