I work for Metro and I can give you some advice. Are you applying for Corrections or patrol? Patrol seems to take a little longer with the backgrounds for some reason. Getting on is not hard, per se, if you meet the qualifications. It just takes time to get through all the red tape. Good luck though. This country is definatly in demand of more police officers.

Why
Not sure why you would want to work for the most violent and murderous department in a multi-state region like Metro. Excessive force and civilian homicides even made the Federal government come in and try to gain some semblance of order and control. Now they have a probation officer killing his fiance! Another metro officer just killed an elderly pedestrian IN a MARKES crosswalk! Please, friend of you want to serve and protect apply elsewhere before you are corrupted.

what's the deal with the so called 'LDS cult ' . I've heard about this in various circles. As if, you get a leg up in certain industries (in Vegas) by being part of this church and these industries have a high preference for their fellow church goers.

I don't like the Christian bashing, which seems not only acceptable, but encouraged behavior. On the other hand if you were interviewing a prospective new hire, and recognized him as a fellow church goer, it's only natural to give preferential treatment.
