First off, sorry if this is off-topic and unwarranted. Just hear my story and provide insight where possible.

Okay, right now Im a 20 year old deciding on my future(school and career wise). I originally am from Las Vegas and moved to Tampa with my parents to be with my extended family. Almost 8 years later, we're deciding on going back to where it all started. My parents are aging and the Florida weather has made them weaker(the humidity sucks) and the bugs, we will not stand any longer.

We have some family over there to give us a helping hand in the mean time but we have no idea on what to do with jobs. My mom has over 10 years cleaning experience(here in Florida and in Vegas) and my dad has almost 8 years cooking experience. I, however, have no experience in Vegas and I am currently working in a hospital in a non-professional job.

This is why I want insight from the locals..we have no problem buying a house and we know how Las Vegas is(crime, weather, etc) so please dont go there. I want insight on the job market.

Thanks!

Please do your research. Vegas is not the same as it use to be 8 years ago. During that time, you submitted an app, you got the job. Vegas currently has the highest unemployment rate for a city in the United States of America. If you plan to rent a house, pull it up on Clark County's web site to make sure it is not in foreclosure. Also you need at least a years salary to survive. If you have kids please consider somewhere else. The education system here is terrible. Also be aware that many people on this forum are real estate agents that will give you misleading information. I highly suggest that you fly out here to check it for yourself. Anyhow, good luck.

Tagalog is a member of our doom squad. He expects the earth to open and suck in Las Vegas in the next few days.

Given that is unlikely the job market is not good but also not as bad as the numbers show. If you want to do construction work...go somewhere else...but the service economy remains functional and there are jobs to be had with perserverence and drive.

You do need some resources...it may well take a few months to get everyone employed. You may well have the hardest time. It is difficult to get into the Casino/hotel system until you are 21 which is generally the better employment.

Yea I kind of figured the minimum age to work in casinos is 21. And I know the reality is that a lot of folks in Vegas work in hotels/casinos. That is obvious. I remember when I lived there as a kid. I know the crime rate isn't great. Heck, we were victims to GTA once but luckily recovered the car.

I have faith that with my parents' experience they will be able to find jobs and support us. I have no kids and no wife (). My job experiences are 1 year in the hospital, non-professional title, and a custodian for 6 months. So my history aint too great. Remember, my schooling is just a basis HS diploma.

I dont really care what industry I go into but I will not do fast food I am willing to go after any certs to enhance my resume. Please this is a huge life decision and I want ANY insight any locals can provide.

There are tens of thousands of out-of-work men and women in Las Vegas who would be freaking grateful for a fast food job.

Two million people in the valley, 70% in the workforce (of working age and willing and able to work) and 15% unemployment (yeah, yeah, olecapt, I'm rounding up from 14.xx%). That means around 200,000 people here want a job but can't find one.

And you "will not do fast food."

What "certs" do you think will help you? I have two college degrees from good schools and I'm working as a relief cook on the graveyard shift. The only people lower than me on the kitchen totem pole are the dishwashers. But you know what? I'd wash dishes if I had to.

Have you looked at the Review Journal classified section recently? There aren't any unskilled or entry level positions out there. Hopefully your Vegas relatives can hook you up with a job of some sort. Take it, whatever it is, and work hard so you get good references when you're looking for something better.

13.8%...which rounds to 14% unless you are carrying a message...and which was driven primarily by a drop in government jobs. I would agree that government jobs are probably as bad as construction right now.

Sorry...but there are jobs out there. Not the best and not easily gotten...but out there. Particularly if you will do whatever. If you are 52 or so it is tougher. If you have a particular skill it may be tougher. But I am not sure, outside of construction, that Las Vegas is worse than the general US.

You got me there -- 2,000,000 times 70% times 13.8% = 193,000

Doesn't really matter, 13 to 16%. The numbers work out about the same.

Suffice to say, there are a LOT more applicants out there than there are jobs.

As is true in much of the entire USofA. If you subtract the construction jobs Las Vegas is probably on or under the US average. So it is, on average, about the same here as elsewhere.

I am not recommending it...just that you get to pick which awful place. Unfortunately the awful does not go away...unless you go for North Dakota.

I wonder if anyone will post a story of how they recently came to Vegas with only a dream and $95.00 in their pocket. Within 3 weeks they found their dream high paying job and perfect spouse.

I would love to hear one of those stories on hear.

If you work in a hospital, we have more hospitals now then we did 8 years ago. They always need help. And as olecapt says, the service industry is still a good place to look for jobs. Tagalog? Well, he/she surprises me. I've never before known such a negative Filipino.

By the way, your remarks about the humidity and bugs in Florida should be proof to anyone who doubts it that Nevada is way ahead of Florida in terms of a more pleasant place to live.
