I heard on a Vegas radio station once that IKEA looks at % of college grads when deciding to come to an area. Apparently Vegas has too few for their liking...of course the radio guys translated that as " Vegas is too stupid"

This is the reason I have heard too. IKEA needs an x% college graduate rate as a demo. They feel their stores that fall below that threshold under perform and they do not want to open any new ones in that demographic.

Don't know how true that is, but looking at what goes on in Sweden I'd say Ikea is a bit hypocritical wouldn't you? Talk about sin city ...that's sin country. All I really know about Chic-Fil-A is that I tried it once and wasn't impressed, but it is said by everyone I ask that it is run by some evangelical nutcase. Cracker Barrel is missing the boat by not having a couple of restaurants here. I'd put one near Silverton/Bass Pro Shops for sure.
Here in Ft. Lauderdale and we have IKEA, [mod cut-- off topic] We also have about 10 casinos and horse racing tracks where you can gamble, and a ship that takes you into international waters to gamble! Yet we still have all of these stores you guys don't. So I don't know why you don't have all of those stores even with the gambling, maybe the companies think Florida is all "fun in the sun", and didn't notice the casinos? IDK.

Also, Miami is a bigger and more well known area in South Florida....yet they have ZERO IKEAS so I don't understand why my area, which is isn't that popular with tourist, got a IKEA first before Miami. They drive up to my area to shop, but it's like a hour from Miami, so it's not that bad.

(spill something) I can see it for spare guest room, but for everyday use, I question it would hold up. Anyone with any experience?

When I needed some furniture for my son's room in Florida which consisted of a bed headboard, good size dresser and a computer center. Not wanting it to be piece meal, I went to a unfinished furniture store in Florida and picked out the pieces together in real wood, with nice metal glides on dresser, and we stained everything ourselves making it look great. It cost more than what it would at Ikea, and there was labor involved in staining and finishing (but no assembly) but it's real wood and very sturdy.

I would imagine you have some unfinished furniture stores in Vegas. Has anybody been to one?
We used to have a great one called Woody's. I bought a butcher block table and a great entertainment center from them. Ex-husband ended up with the furniture in the divorce.

It's very simple -- average household income and average household education. IKEA is looking for areas that have X population, who makes an average of Y per year and has Z years of post-secondary education.

Miami may have X, but they don't have Y and Z. Same with Las Vegas. Fort Lauderdale may be smaller, but they're richer and better educated. So they get the store. And the rest of south Florida gets to drive there. I can't imagine WHY Floridians buy IKEA though, the humidity is enough to ruin the particleboard that IKEA "furniture" is made from.

You are spot on about the required statistics for a chain that wants to open up a store. [mod cut-- response to deleted portion of above post]

why does IKEA look for high college grad demographic areas? It's not like they have high end / sophisticated products.
And for college students, most will just buy cheap (Walmart, Target will do) or used furniture (Craigslist) anyway.
