Decided it was time to come back for a short visit. In day one found out my old favorite Mexican restaurant now sucks, In N Out actually has times when they are nearly empty and the two houses neighboring one of my rentals went to crap. Traffic on the Beltway this morning seemed quite a bit heavier than I remember when I moved away in 2010 so thats a good sign. And just saw an old friend of mine who owns 2 nail salons in the SW part of town and she says business is up nicely over last year due to lots of new residents from out of state, but her workers say they are cheap and barely tip. Dont know if that is good or bad. One last thing is how do these "neighborhood" hotels like Courtyards or Doubletrees and their competitors away from the Strip survive? I drove by a few last night and their parking lots were virtually empty. With business in Vegas outside the Strip still weak and all the cheap casino hotel rooms available mid week this seems like the worst business around.

Ok, so your favorite restaurant now sucks, and the general neighborhood you lived in has gone downhill, and traffic is worse which also sucks. I personally would argue all 3 of those are bad, since I absolutely HATE traffic jams.

Back to the topic at hand:
People do say that there's more traffic now in Vags, both on the roads and on the strip...etc, etc. The strip always seems plenty busy to me, even in the middle of a week day. What I don't understand, though, is the reference point. Visitor traffic to Vegas during the worst time-period (2009) I think was only off the '06/'07 highs by 10% or so, and the resident population of Clark County has not really changed at all, either way, in the last 3 or 4 years. So why are people reporting huge "crowd" and "traffic" variation, or are people's own prejudices and statistically insignificant perceptions to blame?

Wow guess I missed out on some fun this afternoon. A few more thoughts:

1. Wow Smith Center is an impressive building. Was almost in awe as I havent really followed its construction much and didnt even have a concept of what it looked like. May it not only thrive, but inspire architects to build 10 more iconic buildings like it around town.
2. City Hall aint bad, but why does it have to look like it was inspired by Aria?
3. How come so few good local steakhouses can make it? Went to Carnevino on someone else's dime for maybe the 5th time and thought at half this price a place out in Summerlin or Anthem could easily make it and have plenty of locals to support it. Is it really that hard to survive without casino subsidy?
4. Always funny seeing true locals on a chilly day. Neighbor of place where I am staying comes to greet me. He had gloves and a down vest on. He complains its too cold in Vegas and he's thought of moving to Florida because of it.

they are telling us that things look brighter. Sure, for the big corporations it might be but for the american public? NOT!
We are a decade away from even considering such a thought.
We will hear much more crap for this election year.
