I agree, which is one of the primary reasons I bought a condo on The Strip. I don't keep a car in Las Vegas. If I get tired of walking or there's too much distance involved, I hop on a bus.

When I was still jogging I didn't care where I ran or how hot it was, and we'd go out and walk or bike for miles for exercise.

Las Vegas has never been a walking town, and the fitness "craze" was late getting here. But it's here, just not so much in the summer unless it's done in a gym. The first ten years or so I lived here you never saw anyone walking, especially on the Strip. Then tourists started walking between casinos, so casinos started building the entrances right out to the street. It used to be that you could park right in front of most casinos.

Exercise is still somewhat of a dirty word here though, thanks to people that came here just to overindulge in things that are sure to kill them. I hate to hear anyone say, "Well, we're all going to die of something," as if we might as well speed it along. That's so negative I want nothing to do with people that think that way. I hope to feel as good as possible right up to the point her father shoots me in the back as I escape her bedroom window.
Buzz, I am not sure I agree..I believe (and this is MY belief) that you go when it's your turn to go...no matter WHAT you have done.. Look at all the fitness people over the years who have died doing the right thing.... And then you look at George Burns - just shy of his 100th brithday and he smokes cigars and drinks martinis at lunch and then he falls in the tub and hits his head and ends up dying... He didn't die of his habits just an accident....

I have had numerous surgeries and broken bones and been in quite a few accidents in my life.. Even had heart surgery in 1961 when I was 3.. I am still here...Lens implants in my eyes...Still here...All my ribs busted at least once..some 2 or 3 times..Still here... Have been in auto accidents where I dented the metal door frame with my head and have had 2nd degree sunburn twice in my younger life....Still here...

I eat red meat and love it.. Love other food as well and have a sweet tooth at times..I am still here....I also have type 2 diabetes due to my inactivity and constraints of my job (never had diabetes before until i acquired this job and will be retiring soon and will be working on my inactivity during the day)....

I have NEVER smoked nor do I drink but vary occasionally.... I have been around cigarette smoke my entire life and do not put a lot of stock in the second hand smoke thing... There have been numerous times I could have died, but I figure it ain't my time yet...

So while I know you think i am helping myself die sooner, I think just the opposite...

Everything is quite handy (CVS, Albertson's etc.) from where we are but I'd like to make a point of walking for an hour in the morning and and hour after dinner to keep the old heart in shape. We have a fitness centre in our condo complex but treadmills and gym equipment get so boring. I know it's too hot to walk our pups right now (August) but come Dec - March I'm hoping to do that in my neighbourhood when we snowbird. We joke now that "Our pups are taking us out for a walk now" because we have to carry them down the concrete path at the complex to the grassy area to do their thing, clean it up, and then carrry them back since you can fry an egg on the sidewalk they're so hot!

They do make dog booties for hot weather. But generally speaking if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog. I have the booties, I used to buy them so they wouldn't get ice between their pads in Minnesota. The light colored pavement is hot but the black stuff is searing! In the heat of the summer, my dogs go out long enough to potty and take a swim. Then they are ready to come back in. After sundown we usually all go out and swim.

In October it cools down enough to be nice out most of the day. Then the dogs spend more time outside. But they swim every day no matter how cold it gets. Usually in November they get to start going places in the car again. That's a red letter day for them.

One of the things I love about our area is that fact that you can walk to almost anything. You even have a library and a post office close by. You are closer than me but I walk to those too. But I'm closer to Starbucks than you are. The more time you are here, the more places you will discover. There's also a little Hispanic grocery on Trop and Mtn Vista you should check out the next time you are here.

I take it we are talking 89121 area if so I'll be seeing you in October and might run into you walking. I guess crossing some roads are a challenge so everyone be careful.

When we visit mid October time, the weather is gorgeous, hot, but not too much so. We walk a lot. As someone else said, we don't see a lot of other pedestrians. We catch the bus down to Sam's Town, then walk over to Wal-Mart to buy some of my wife Judy's favourite jeans from there. Walk back to Sams - all we see are people in cars. Walked all the way up Paradise Road from Tropicana last visit, can't remember seeing anyone else walking. I'm not quite sure if it's dangerous or not. Maybe that's why!!

To test pavement for your dogs, hold the back of your hand to it for a count of 5. If it is too hot for you it's too hot for them. Also remember that small dogs are closer to the heat radiating off the ground so watch the little ones.

I will go anywhere around here in the daytime. But I don't walk alone at night. I don't think it's dangerous particularly, but a woman alone at night is a target. And I don't want to have to take anyone down.
