My parents are looking for places to retire. LV real estate looks cheap. But my parents don't like the Strip or "TV Vegas." How can they see normal LV neighborhoods and life without visiting? Is there a site that promotes moving to Vegas for people who don't want to gamble and go to concerts? Or is the Strip so central to Vegas that anyone who doesn't like the Strip probably wouldn't like Vegas?

I don't think 'liking' the strip should be a concern.
The summer heat on the other hand.....
I'm assuming your parents are close to their senior years.
Before picking up and moving here they 1000% HAVE to come here in July.
....and stay for a few weeks... minimum.

Yes but it's a dry heat and there's the Monsoon season in July that tapers the temps to a less than burning 100 degrees - maybe even less than that if it rains enough. It'll turn into a Florida summer before you even know it! Not too shabby...

and rarely any BUGS....

When local there's really no ned to go to the strip unless it's for a show or something. The local casino's get the job done.. If thinking of moving to Vegas it's a good idea to visit..Contact a senior center for information..I will say this.. I do see some seniors crawling into the casino's.. At the very least something makes them get out of the house..

Most locals I know rarely visit the strip unless they work there or are entertaining guests that want to see it. Once in awhile there is a concert or event that one might want to see, maybe a restaurant they want to try, otherwise most locals find the strip to be a pain. There are, of course, exceptions.

Most of the older folks seem to like to hang out at the golf course or the "local's joints" when not doing something like visiting cool places like Springs Preserve or just walking their dogs around the neighborhood.

Most of Vegas is just a big, boring suburb.

Not at all. Our family doesn't like any of the typical Las Vegas draws, but we love it in Las Vegas. +1 to NVGal with the exception of the boring suburb part (there's always plenty to see and do). I think it really boils down to the community, they should really research and visit the communities they are interested in to see which of them they really like. They will likely find themselves drawn to a certain area of the valley, and certain community, or they will not and look somewhere else for retirement.

Have them book a room in Green Valley Ranch or Red Rocks Station, rent a car, and drive around an see the metro area. Have them call a realtor or two to show them some houses. As far as off the strip attractions, I'm sure many of the of more complete guide books and/or tourist websites have some info they could use.

Monsoon season is the worst time of the year. 100f AND humidity. It doesn't get any worse than that.

I agree -- parents need to spend at least a month here, preferably late July, early August. Just to see how bad it gets. Google "vacation house las vegas" and rent a place for a month. Rent a car for a month. At the end of that month, they'll know whether they'd like it here or not.

Just don't go during Oct. or Nov. -- those are the two best months of the year. And it would be quite the bait-and-switch to fall in love with October, and then get blown away by the convection oven that is July and August.
