Middle of the desert with the most beautiful scenery of any part in the country. Valley of Fire (a short drive away) is not on my "Top 10 Ugliest Places" list as of yet. Too much cigarette smoke may apply if you plan on spending all of your waking hours in a Fremont St. casino. All of the strip casinos are excellently ventilated. And that only applies if you're a gambler to begin with. Homeless people are everywhere, just in Las Vegas they don't freeze to death. Crime is no higher here than in other major metropolitan areas (see the 4000 threads on this subject) Extreme hot, yup. It's a desert. But you don't have to stay inside for 6 months out of the year because it's too cold to venture out like we're experiencing here in the Northeast. You don't have to shovel heat, and I have never once skidded off the road into a heatbank.

1) Not one proper pub/bar in this entire town. They're all smoke-filled video-poker dens. I'd rather be a brain in a zombie convention than visit ANY of the video-poker bars.

2) The homogenous nature of this town. It's just one Applebee's, CVS, 7-Eleven, Video-Poker Bar, Chili's, Carl's Jr., Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Target, KFC after another. People don't demand culture or mom-and-pop stores. They demand a Chik-Fil-A to round out the assortment of chain stores. Oh and a Cracker Barrel. That's what this population wants more than anything -- a Chik-Fil-A and a Cracker Barrel.

3) We could have a 100% drop-out rate, roads in complete ruin, and armed bands of thugs roaming the streets. People here would STILL be against a tax increase.

There's a lot more, but those are three of the big ones.

There are many trees in Clark County especially Pine trees, at least in my neighborhood in
89117 and the surrounding area, Pine trees are 30-50 ft tall.

Agree with ScoopLV on the lack of proper pubs/bars. As a woman I would also love for there to be a proper pub SOMEwhere here where I could even go alone and have a guinness, maybe work on my laptop and not feel like a freak.

I lived in NYC and LA for many years and moved here for my boyfriend's job. I have to say, being able to live in a really nice apartment in a really nice neighborhood for a fraction of what I paid in both other cities for a comparable place is a HUGE plus. I miss the beach and we plan to make it back to LA. But the mountains and sky here are GORGEOUS. Like, you can SEE the sky at night; it's crystal clear.

My bf travels a lot so I'm alone a lot of the time. I'm pretty introverted and have trouble making good friends and find it's even harder here in Vegas.

I love that there's a burgeoning arts/theatre scene downtown. As far as ****ty neighborhoods, they exist everywhere.

Wish there were better farmer's markets, but then again, we're in the middle of the desert...

Farmers market is improving, a few in my side of town at Tivoli Village, Bruce Trent Park and even further around the Floyd Lamb Area if I am not mistaken. The one in Downtown Vegas is lousy. The one in Town Square could use more vendors and people if they still have it there.

So much misinformation. San Diego is Mediterranean desert. If you want to see what it really looks like go 40 miles north or south. They hills do green in the winter spring but the rest of the year they are brown and ugly...Scattered clumps of trees with some water source separating square miles of brown gunk. Ain't irrigation wonderful? In Las Vegas or San Diego.

Many of the video poker parlors are quite clearly neighborhood pubs. Half the attendees know each other. The socialization is rampant. Often the places have rules so that players can get to the VP machines. Otherwise they would sit dead with the stoop occupied by a pubby.

I do wish the smoking ban had stuck as I am not a fan of cigarette smoke.

There are innumberable nice places to eat. We hit Saffron last week which was quite nice Indian...and clearly a neighborhood place. We have eaten one a month or more at the Burrito Inn. Not the best Mexican place in the world but a very nice and not bank breaking meal. And there are dozens of others.

And if you want a little "culture" you can hit the Smith Center or some of the stages at FSE...depending on how your culture vector points.

My only real complaint is that I don't like the winter cold. It is not that I can't deal with it...I lived almost 20 years in upstate NY...but I still don't like temps below 45.

The heat is vastly over emphasized. With the normal humidity it is quite pleasant until it reaches over 105. And that says mornings throughout the summer are very pleasant.

i was born & raised in northern california (30+ years); went to college in phoenix (5 yrs); lived in vegas for 6 months before moving to pahrump.

things i like:
* 24 hr lifestyle, no not everything is open 24, but it's nice to be able to grocery shop at midnight if i wanna
* the heat. northern california was too damp/cold for me; phx was TOOOOO hot
* lower cost of living
* people know how to drive out here. i like to speed, not a lot, but dang it - can't we go at LEAST the speed limit???
* i'm just a few hours away from everything - mountains, snow, beach, etc

things i'm not so impressed with:
* i miss the green, but i can plant just about anything i had in northern california, so it's not that big of deal

at this point, you'll have to drag me kicking & screaming outta this state

Love the weather, although would like a little warmer in the winter......the beauty of the mountains as they change color according to how the sun hits them......the dry climate.....lack of mosquitos and fleas.....contemporary spanish house architecture......big assortment of great restaurants.....fantastic shopping......low utility costs.....lack of state tax......low property taxes.....wonderful master planned communities.

Do not like high cost of insurance because of the 24/7 drinking......scorpions........
