We will be relocating late in 2014.

Just wondering what methods of gardening work well in the Vegas valley.
Also what grows well out there?
I hear corn does poorly, and that melons and peppers do well.
Any more insight?

Rasied beds with drip watering and maybe some type of shade structure?
Plenty of mulch ?

As a disabled person, my garden is one of my few remaining joys.

Thanks folks!

Definitely shade. A friend has been bringing in the most wonderful tomatoes. Springs preserve has a lot of gardening info. It's much more possible here than most think. I believe there might even be a facility somewhere that you can buy real compost, but don't quote me on that!

Lesley, the tomato lady who has the website that is linked above, provided consulting to my wife for her first ever garden. It has been a success with a bountiful harvest of cherry tomatoes, lettuce, Swiss chard, chamomile, basil, oregano, thyme, dill, radishes, and a few other things I do not recall since the harvesting began this past Spring. Some things that grew without "fruiting" much were the green beens and cucumbers. But that is probably a matter of learning how to tweak the soil some. My wife has a raised bed with an irrigation system. The soil was purchased from Lesley, and she also helped install the irrigation system. Considering the joy my wife finds in attending other garden and the delicious veggies and spices we have already gotten, the money was some of the best we have ever spent.

^^

I'll third that recommendation. I've been to her house. She knows what she's talking about. I also have both of her books.

Since she lives there, it is her house. But it looks a lot more like a nursery that allows someone to live in a nice place while taking care of the garden. . It is pretty impressive, and a great endorsement for her to show that she knows what she is talking about.
