What a dumb article. They operate in two different universes. Las Vegas is a destination, it has to be. People generally don't drive 4 hours or more to gamble or do whatever and then get back in the car and go home on the same day. If someone visits Vegas they are almost always going to stay for at least one night. For AC the day tripper has been and always will be the largest part of their customer base, witness their low rate of air passenger arrivals for further proof. The day tripper exists in full force when it comes to gamblers and this trend has gotten much stronger as gambling has proliferated. Yet Las Vegas has never really had this segment because of its isolated location. So even when feeder markets open up new gambling options, Las Vegas has no reason to worry because it has always had to attract destination visitors. When AC's feeder markets open up other gambling options they get creamed because all they ever had to do and frankly all that ever was a worthwhile investment was just providing them a slot machine or table to play on.

For a long time AC survived by being the only gambling on the east coast. Most of the properties were either old, decrepit leftovers from the pre-gambling era, or cheap, basic modern buildings, with no real attraction besides gaming. A lot of them were milked for any cash they could generate, with little put in for maintenance or upgrades.

Then they got competition. First indian casinos in CT, then DE and PA legalized casinos. So there were at least equivalent if not better casinos closer than AC to a large part of AC feeder markets. So they got hammered. Even building new, decent casinos doesn't help (thinking of Revel.)

Now NY is legalizing casinos (we already have some slot barns, but without real table games.) Originally these were supposed to be upstate (away from NYC.) But now some of the applicants are trying to push them as far south as possible, which would make them more convenient than AC to people in NYC, and MUCH more convenient to people in Northern NJ. This will be the last nail in AC's coffin.

Oh come on! Hot women in little black dresses! You won't get that density of women on the street or in the pools in Atlantic city. Even many of the men aren't bad to look at for the ladies, now that they don't wear pants down to their knees with boxer shorts showing underneath.

AC is a depressing place. Another problem is that it is part of Northeast winter cycle. The large corporations don't hold conventions there, they prefer FL so they can rent out the entire theme park for attendees. LV is the top choice for major conventions.

Vegas is accessible year-round. Vegas has a significant international presence and market. AC had/has neither of those things.

American Restoration

What happens in Vegas

As much as Nevadans love to gripe about California and poke fun at us, Hollywood has helped the city immensely through so much media exposure, which piques curiosity and leads to tourism.
You left out a few:
Las Vegas Strip
Vegas Jailhouse
Cops

It's all about context.

For instance, when filing my taxes, I LOVE Californians.

When discussing politics, I don't love Californians.

When driving around, they're a pain in the arse. They never know where they're going and they're way too aggressive.

I was born and raised in California. Spent the first 36 years of my life there. There's a lot to love about that state, and a lot to hate. Nature created a spectacular scene, and then the people came and screwed it all up.

No need for an article. I can sum it up in one sentence: because AC sucks. Even people from New York or New Jersey would rather go to Vegas than AC.

I'm from Canada and have been to Las Vegas twice. Once for a week and the other for 4 days (a week in Vegas is kind of crazy, as you can probably imagine). My wife and I would return to Vegas in a heartbeat. It truly is one of the largest entertainment capitals of North America. Atlantic City, on the other hand, has never crossed our travel radar despite being much closer to home.
