I'm coming out to Vegas in about 4 months, and I am concerned about the types of pests and bugs that are common in the area. I am coming from south GA, which is a completely different climate, so I don't know what to expect as far as what bugs are common there. I also have a small dog that is an indoor pet, but I'm worried about scorpions and other dangerous things I need to watch for. I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can give me. A side note -- I've always been deathly afraid of cockroaches...so could you all make my day and tell me they don't exist out there? LOL

No mosquitoes, fleas, snails, slugs, and you'll never see a scorpion inside of town. Roaches do exist, but there indistinguishable from people from L.A., so be careful with your spray!

I hate to tell you this, GoWest, but when it gets hot out here, the giant underground cockroaches come out, terrorizing the city, carting off small kids and pets. They will also take up residence on your favorite recliner, hogging the remote.

As far as pets are concerned, no one has yet mentioned coyotes and those are pretty big pests. Just received a picture of a coyote prowling a dog park in Summerlin. They wouldn't bother bigger dogs but little ones and cats could be in danger. And what about the occasional poisionous snake?

Coyotes do exist. But pretty much only in the ruralish areas or the golf courses. Generally don't come over the walls in walled areas. Coyote knows some of those walled areas have things that would eat a coyote.
I have yet to see a snake. Maybe up against the mountains or such. I actually have not even heard of one down on the flats. My dog ran a lot in the desert chasing rabbits and desert rats. He never raised one. Silly dog....never did figure out that the rabbits did not even need high gear to get away. The desert rats though were in trouble.

I lived in Vegas for 10 years and never saw a snake or scorpion or any thing too scary. Just a few big roaches outside.I lived in NY for a long time and we had lots more bugs. I have heard of others having problems with scorpions in their house or apartment. Either they lived on the outskirts of town or in a new just built development.
