I'm sorry, but if that's true, your family "friend" sounds a tad bit dramatic and like a bit of a douchebag . For one thing, Oakland's airport is nowhere near the "ghetto". It's way out on Hegenberger Road and practically in San Leandro and Alameda near the Coast Guard base.

Secondly, for a grown man who's been militarily trained in the SFPD, and legally carrying a firearm, to refuse to come and pick up his friends sounds like he's got a really awful personal problem. In other words, he's not as much of a "friend" as you may think. I've flown into Oakland quite a few times to visit my nephew at Alameda, and never have I or my wife felt intimidated.

McCarran International has more sketchy areas in A LOT CLOSER proximity than Oakland International does. Yet, despite that, I've never felt intimidated to the point where I couldn't leave the airport and venture past the rougher parts of Paradise towards the Strip.

I wonder how many LVMPD officers have refused to go pick up friends and relatives at McCarran, for fear of having to drive through sketchy parts of Paradise?
Agreed, OAK is overall a damn good Airport. SF made the headlines half way around the world, where I live. 19 yo murdered an 84 yo Thai man, who was just standing in front of his garage at 830am. Absolutely sickening. Quite a few tourists find out, the hard way, there is a nasty housing project adjacent to Fisherman's Wharf.

We love it up here in 89149 (northwest). We’re smack dab in the middle of the rural preservation, which means no more than two housing units per acre for at least 2 miles in any direction. Large lots filled with mostly 3000sqft+ single story homes, no apartments, and no commercial zoning seems to keep things pretty peaceful and quiet.

I owned a home in Providence on Gray Horse Street. I loved it up there too! However, it was not peaceful and quiet at my house due to "The German Shepherd Store". Six of those big boys barking at all times of day and night. Buyer beware, it was a nightmare to deal with. It's not the reason I moved, but it could have been if other things didn't precipitate the sale of the house.

I love Summerlin West as far as location goes. I don't know anything about the builders. To me location is A+!

Sandalwood will come in at over 900k, the lot premium and upgrades will likely put you at the 1mil mark. Bristle Vale might be too small for what you were looking for?

You're right. I realize I'll have to settle for a 3 bedroom, which is okay too. I saw some homes starting 837k, but I guess once you add the common upgrades it can climb really fast in price. Thanks!

Buying new construction will eat you alive in "upgrades" and after closing expenses like landscaping and window treatment. I would try hard to find an existing home, one that has everything you want or one that is less expensive you can spend money on.
