This morning I found what appeared to be a great deal....

FRYS.com*|*TOSHIBA

a 40 inch Toshiba lcd with 1080p for $499 is unheard of. I went ahead and ordered it along with two HDMI cables. I paid for it by credit card, and all three items showed they were available for local pickup. I got a call from them earlier this morning saying they have the TV, but only one is left, and it is a customer return. They will not discount it either. They also said they are out of the $9 HDMI cables I ordered, and tried to sell me more expensive ones. Needless to say, I told them to, well you know...

That's the old bait and switch.

Costco has a 40" 1080p LCD for $499, and they will extend the warranty to two years, plus 2% off for Executive Membership. It's a lesser brand than Toshiba, though in LCD TVs Toshiba itself is itself considered a lesser brand compared to Sony and Samsung.

I might be interested in that, but don't you need a membership to buy it? As far as the warranty, I have a platinum mastercard that automatically doubles the factory warranty, so that is not a concern.

Thanks. Maybe this happened for a reason. I was under the assumption that Toshiba was a good brand. Of course I would like prefer to get a Sony Bravia if cost was no object. I currently have a Samsung, and it has been nothing but trouble. The component inputs no longer work, and the speakers started going out not too long after I bought it. I just do not know what to buy anymore. After googling the model number, it seems I am not alone, and lots of others are having the same exact problems I am having. The set is only 4 years old.

I suspect that most of these brands are assembled at the same overseas factories and are almost identical.

lvd if you buy at samsclub, there is an open return policy, meaning tomorrow, next wk, a year, 3yrs, you can return the tv.

as for pm's post.. no the tvs arent assembled at the same plant and no they are not almost identical...

check out BB, and Insignia.. If you like something, then go on ebay and buy a BB Coupon for 10% off (it'll cost u a buck or two).

Airics is right. Sony and Samsung are assembled in Korea. I still maintain the quality and components are very similar.
