But the led bulbs last 21 times longer.
How long would that be?

Probably very variable. The actual LED semiconductor likely has a life of 50,000 to a 1,000,000 hours. But that LED is driven by a circuit and in a container. Both of these will probably have more impact on life than the actual LED piece. Capacitors for instance can have a very variable life. And some types are very sensitive to heat.

And as you get to low cost you have the drive to lower the component costs which inevitables leads to components with shorter lives.

So I would think it will be a few more years yet before we understand what the real life of LED bulbs as shipped actually is. And then of course the industry will likely fix the worst problems and you will get yet another answer.

I would estimate at the moment they will go from 5 to 10 years in normal use. I have 30 or so that have been running mostly for two years. Only failure was one dead on arrival.

I'm a contrarian. I enjoy arguing. But arguing about some pocket change is just too far.

Led bulbs are superior to CFL and Incandescent. That's really all that needs to be said.
Cheap. Long lasting. Low energy consumption.

I do photo and video so I have a lot of lights. My garage is pretty lit up as well because I work in there a lot. I have 2 kids that leave lights on all the time.

I don't actively try to keep it down. But my bill is pretty low. 50-130ish depending on time of year.

They're in a brown package. My whole house is now led. Electric bill is down. It's brighter in here. Everything looks better.
They don't burn out.
I can run all 68 bulbs in my house for less than 1 regular bulb.
Working on it. Still have a few spotlights from previous owners we haven't done yet. We've considered just removing them. Those people had a strange way of placing spots where they really don't highlight used areas.

Some lamps are using up our daylight incandescent bulbs.

We've replaced all our 4 foot florescent bulbs with leds. What a difference! Replaced three spots in the master closet with four foot leds. We can now see what's in there. The spots were pathetic.

Buying leds on sale is key. Some of our four footers were less than florescent bulbs.

Our outside lights are now all leds. I like the quality of the light better than the old incandescent lights.
