The jobs that would normally be for teenagers are now being sought by older workers. A position that normally has 10 applicants a year has probably 200 a month right now. There are positions out there, you just need to hit the ground running, apply anywhere and everywhere, dress to impress, and be willing to accept anything.

Once again, this is not a Vegas issue. It's a nationwide issue, pick up any newspaper and you'll see long lines at job fairs in NYC, Charlotte, Philly, L.A., etc. Your experience working in the casinos helps, but if you want to get back into the casino business, you should be prepared to start at the bottom again. I will state that with the amount of high turnover (both voluntary and involuntary) in casinos, things do open up for dealers. My wife got out of dealer school 9 months ago became an extra-board at a off-strip property and now is full-time with a set schedule. The pay is not good ($6.85 + tips) so you should also have at least 6 months of cash available for living expenses.

Good luck with the job search.

Great Post Golfinnova,

You hit the nail on the head. Times are tough right now. I am so sick and tired of hearing people saying I will not accept a low paying job. We are in near great depression state right now and people need to wake up. By the way, congratulations to your wife. The hourly pay is low like my job, but at least she will make quite a lot in tips.

Thanks LVD,

Spot on with your analogy, things are tough and people must be willing to change their habits. The days of walking in and expecting employers to give you $40,000+ jobs are pretty much over for now whether you have tons of experience or multiple degrees. My wife was making 6 figures over 2 years ago as a VP and now makes less than $15K, but it's a job.

Thanks for all your replies.

Sounds like the bread lines and soup kitchens aren't exactly overflowing yet so I'll give a shot. I don't mind entry level work anyway, just want to get back home where I belong. My finances are ok at the moment but I don't want to completely drain them off in futility either, I got a decent down payment for a home and don't want to touch it for now.

BTW, I understand your frustration Soundman, I'd feel the same way if I was looking for something in my field for 8 months and was coming up zilch--I hope you get the City Center gig. Are you doing other things in the meantime?

What kind of work are you looking for? Is it possible to continue your current employment while trying to look for work in LV? I hear it's very hard to look for work in LV without being there, however.

I get the sense that the more highly skilled and experienced workers are still able to find employment if they're flexible with regards to location, pay etc.

No jobs? This is a service industry city. Get the sunday paper and check it out. Plenty of bartender..server..valet..dealer jobs out there that pay great. I am currently bartending at a local pub making close to $500 a night in tips. Plenty of server jobs that with tips you will be making close to $25 an hour. Its summertime here....soo many pools hiring seasonal help. If you are money wise you can work the summer season and save enough money to live on the whole year. As long as you are decent looking and have a good personality this town is a gold mine!

You're not doing anyone any favors by telling boldfaced lies.

Ditto!

I'm glad I didn't have to be the first to say it!

Boldface lies? What gives you the right to accuse me of lying? I have been living here for 9 years and have been in the service industry as a bartender. Bartenders at local gaming bars make a great living. I have no need to lie. What was so outlandish about what was said? Is it that inconceivable to you that people make 300-500 a day out here in the service industry? If so you guys are very green as to what goes on in Vegas. My buddy who is a server at 9 steakhouse in the Palms made $180 K last year working 4 days a week. Any of you are welcome to joing me at my bar for a drink on any Friday , Saturday or Sunday night just to see a packed bar and how much money is flying around the place.

He is not lying. He is oversimplifying.

I make a very nice living selling RE in Las Vegas. But I assure you unless you are a world class talent you will not do as well as I do until you been at it some years. In fact if you try it the odds are very strong you will starve to death.

Joe is the same way.

It is much easier once inside the system.

Sitting here watching my gardener do his thing. I would bet you he breaks 100 grand and pays taxes on about a third of it. He too is inside.
